The Thai Chamber of Commerce recently ranked energy businesses among the top 10 rising stars this year, because of the high oil price and government incentives

This year many companies, including Bangchak Petroleum, the developer of the Sunny Bangchak solar-plant project; Four Us Group, which signed a joint-venture agreement with Germany-based Galip; and SPCG have solar-power expansion plans.

Bangchak president Anusorn Sangnimnuan recently said the Sunny Bangchak solar-farm project this year would enter the second phase totalling 32 megawatts after the first phase of 38MW was already established. It is looking for a subcontractor for the second-phase construction.

The returns from the project look promising, thanks to declining solar-panel costs and the supportive measures from the government, he added.

Chingchai Chonchewat, president of Four Us Group, said that this year the company would speed up its investment in solar farms with a combined 84MW.

The plants, each generating 6-8MW, will be located in seven provinces - Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Surin, Chon Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The total cost is Bt8.2 billion. The company will start feeding power to the Provincial Electricity Authority in December.

Wandee Khunchornyakong, chairman and chief executive officer of SPCG, said the company was confident that all of its 34 projects with combined capacity of 204MW would be up and running by next year.

The total cost is Bt24 billion. Five of the plants are already completed with combined capacity of 30|MW.

The other rising star is the filling-station business for natural gas for vehicles and liquefied petroleum gas, thanks to rising demand and high petrol prices.

Peerapong Achariyacheevin, senior executive vice president for the gas business of PTT, said that this year PTT would expand its NGV stations to 500 from the current 466, which would boost its NGV distribution capacity by 525 tonnes per day to 1,425 tonnes.

The expansion cost is Bt980 million.
