Every single junk food meal damages your arteries, new study reveals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A single junk food meal -- composed mainly of saturated fat -- is detrimental to the health of the arteries, while no damage occurs after consuming a Mediterranean meal rich in good fats such as mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Montreal-affiliated ?PIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute. The Mediterranean meal may even have a positive effect on the arteries.

The findings are being presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which runs in Toronto until Wednesday, by the head of the study, Dr. Anil Nigam, Director of Research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (?PIC) and associate professor at the university's Faculty of Medicine.

Bad fat vs. good fat

Dr. Nigam undertook the study to compare the effects of junk food and typical Mediterranean meal on the vascular endothelium: the inner lining of the blood vessels. By measuring endothelial function, it is possible to determine how easily the arteries will dilate after a temporary, five-minute occlusion, following the consumption of the two types of meals. This is a very interesting analysis for researchers to perform as endothelial function is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease.

The study also revealed that participants with higher blood triglyceride levels seemed to benefit more from the healthy meals. Their arteries responded better to the Mediterranean meal compared to people with low triglyceride levels. "We believe that a Mediterranean-type diet may be particularly beneficial for individuals with high triglyceride levels, such as patients with metabolic syndrome, precisely because it could help keep arteries healthy," Dr. Nigam said.

Mediterranean meal vs. junk food meal

The results were established in 28 non-smoking men, who ate the Mediterranean-type meal first and then the junk food-type meal one week later. Before beginning, the men underwent an ultrasound of the antecubital artery at the elbow crease after fasting for 12-hours to assess their baseline endothelial function. The researchers then tested the effects of each meal. The first was composed of salmon, almonds, and vegetables cooked in olive oil, of which 51% of total calories came from fat (mostly monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats.) The second meal consisted of a sandwich made of a sausage, an egg, and a slice of cheese, and three hash browns, for a total of 58% of total calories from fat: extremely rich in saturated fatty acids and containing no omega-3s. At two hours and four hours after each meal, participants underwent further ultrasounds to assess how the food had impacted their endothelial function.

Dr. Nigam and his team found that after eating the junk food meal, the arteries of the study participants dilated 24% less than they did when in the fasting state. In contrast, the arteries were found to dilate normally and maintain good blood flow after the Mediterranean-type meal.

"These results will positively alter how we eat on a daily basis. Poor endothelial function is one of the most significant precursors of atherosclerosis. It is now something to think about at every meal," Dr. Nigam said.

Political ads blitz viewers, risk voter turnoff

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Is there any escape from all those political ads in the most hotly contested states in the three weeks before the presidential election?

The TV ads come in rapid succession and at all hours ? in the middle of newscasts, soap operas and talk shows. They cover everything from jobs to education to trust, and they're sharply negative.

It's all enough to turn off voters, leaving them frustrated and annoyed.

"It's just way too much," says Scot French, a history professor at the University of Central Florida. He lives along the swing-voting Interstate 4 corridor that will play an important role in deciding whether President Barack Obama or Mitt Romney wins the state, and perhaps the White House.

French is quick to criticize both political parties, calling the homestretch advertising deluge "a game of sowing confusion among those who are confusable."

This is the risk facing the candidates and their allies as they spend vast sums of money before the Nov. 6 vote. It's a risk that both sides are willing to take, given that polls show the race remains close nationally and in the most competitive states such as Florida.

By the end, the campaigns and independent groups will have spent about $1.1 billion on television advertising this year, with $750 million already allocated in the handful of states likely to determine the outcome of the contest ? Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, the Kantar-Campaign Media Analysis Group estimates.

Florida tops the list, with more than $150 million spent by both sides so far.

At least some voters tuned out long ago. In interviews last week, many cited the negativity and lack of specifics in the commercials; others said they had already decided which candidate to support and didn't need to be persuaded.

Indeed, many of the commercials at this late stage are aimed at those voters who have not yet locked in on their selection. The target audience includes people such as Felicity Rusnak, a stay-at-home mom from Orlando. But Rusnak, 40, says she pays no attention to the ads and will rely on other sources of information to make up her mind.

"The ads I just find entertaining," Rusnak said. "The debates and what I read about are going to affect my decision. I need to know where the candidates stand."

There's no doubt that TV advertising has the power to shift voter perceptions, particularly when a candidate is not well known. Romney prevailed in the Republican primaries after he and his allies buried his two main rivals with negative advertising in early voting states. Obama's team tagged Romney as a ruthless corporate raider with a flood of negative advertising in the early stages of the general election. The ads may have shaped perceptions in states such as Ohio, where Obama has held a narrow lead in polling for weeks.

Even so, the unprecedented level of spending this year on ads hasn't changed many minds, according to one analyst.

"There's not much bang for the buck," says John Geer, a political science professor at Vanderbilt University who studies presidential campaign advertising. "The public is pretty much set on who they will vote for and only a tiny slice is up for grabs."

That was the finding of his YouGov Ad Rating project, which screens political commercials with representative sample of 600 voters, including an oversample of 200 swing voters, who judge them for their fairness, believability and emotional reactions. Few ads, he said, really "move the dials."

Not that the candidates and their backers aren't trying their best to do just that.

In the final weeks, Obama's team is running an ad warning that Romney would cut Medicaid money for nursing home care. "We have a president who won't let that happen," the ad says.

Romney primarily is running a spot in which he promises to boost the economy through manufacturing, energy and cracking down on China.

"Let me tell you how I will create 12 million jobs when President Obama couldn't," Romney says.

Both sides are being buffeted by independent groups.

Romney is getting a big assist from two super political action committees, Restore Our Future and American Crossroads. The pro-Obama Priorities USA Action is running an ad saying Romney would cut early childhood education if elected.

Among those who aren't watching is Paul Gentille, a 67-year-old Obama supporter from St. Petersburg.

He said he tuned out the ads months ago. "Everyone I know has already made up their mind. The ads are kind of annoying," he said. "It's a shame to see so much money being spent."

On the other side is Julie Harris, also of St. Petersburg.

The 33-year-old stay-at-home mom said she always planned to support Romney and that his ads made her "more enthusiastic" about doing so. One particular Obama ad stuck out to her: the ad assailing Romney's pledge to end federal support of public television and the Sesame Street character Big Bird. Even though she's a fan of public TV, she says that ad won't affect her vote.

Massive Texas cancer research fund deals with more departures

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas is the nation's second-largest pool of cancer research funding.

Texas is a leader in cancer research. And, recently, it's also been a leader in cancer research controversy.

In 2007, Texas voters created a $3 billion cancer research fund, second only in size to that of the National Institutes of Health. The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas has been under fire since May, when its chief science officer, Dr. Alfred Gilman, a Nobel Prize-winner, announced he was stepping down because, he said, CPRIT executives were bypassing scientific review when they made decisions about what projects to fund.

Last week, seven more scientists resigned from CPRIT, and Gilman and Dr. Phillip Sharp, another Nobel laureate who resigned from CPRIT, wrote an opinion piece for the Houston Chronicle about the organization's future.

For its part, CPRIT says it is "entering a new era" and has several strong candidates to fill Gilman's post.

Too much helpful algae can be bad for corals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? A new study by scientists at the University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science shows that corals may be more severely impacted by climate warming when they contain too many symbiotic algae. The single-celled algae living inside corals are usually the key to coral success, providing the energy needed to build massive reef frameworks. However, when temperatures become too warm, these algae are expelled from corals during episodes of coral 'bleaching' that can lead to widespread death of corals. Until now, it was thought that corals with more algal symbionts would be more tolerant of bleaching because they had 'more symbionts to lose.' The new study shows that the opposite is true.

"We discovered that the more symbiotic algae a coral has, the more severely it bleaches, showing that too much of a good thing can actually be bad," said Ross Cunning, Ph.D. student and lead author of the study. "We also learned that the number of algae in corals varies over time, which helps us better understand coral bleaching risk."

His research was conducted using cauliflower coral (Pocillopora damicornis) collected from the Pacific coast of Panama. The corals were monitored for six months at the UM's Experimental Hatchery, where they slowly warmed up and ultimately bleached. The number of symbiotic algae in the corals was studied by analyzing DNA samples with new highly sensitive genetic techniques that determine the ratio of algal cells to coral cells. This improved technique made the discovery possible by showing that corals with more algae bleached more severely than those with fewer algae.

"Corals regulate their symbionts to match the environment in which they are found, and this study shows there is a real cost to having too many," said co-author Andrew Baker, associate professor at UM's Rosenstiel School. "There are real-world implications of this. Corals will be more vulnerable to bleaching if they are found in environments which increase the number of symbionts, such as coastal reefs polluted by wastewater and runoff. If we can improve water quality, we might be able to buy some time to help these reefs avoid the worst effects of climate change.

"Other environmental changes, including ocean acidification as a result of increasing carbon dioxide emissions, might also influence bleaching vulnerability in ways we haven't thought of before," Baker added.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

October 15, 2012 (BRONX, NY) Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University has received a $3 million grant from the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research to establish the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research. The grant will fund research to translate recent laboratory and animal discoveries into therapies to slow human aging.

Aging contributes to many of the debilitating and costly diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes that burden the United States and many other countries. This complex but universal condition causes individual cells and the body as a whole to decline in function. Finding the mechanisms that underlie the aging process may lead to treatments that slow aging, prevent or limit common diseases, and allow people to live healthier, longer lives.

"Unless we find protective mechanisms to delay aging, we will not make progress against age-related diseases," said Nir Barzilai, M.D., co-director of the new center as well as director of the Institute for Aging Research, the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair in Aging Research, and professor of medicine and of genetics at Einstein. "With this valuable grant from the Paul F. Glenn Foundation, we hope to make significant advances toward understanding the aging process and improving human health."

"The generosity of Paul F. Glenn and his foundation is a welcome shot in the arm for aging research in the United States, which is chronically underfunded," said Jan Vijg, Ph.D., co-director of the new center, the Lola and Saul Kramer Chair in Molecular Genetics, and professor and chair of genetics and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at Einstein. "This grant will help Einstein to maintain its position as one of the world's leaders in this rapidly growing field."

"Paul F. Glenn has been a visionary in aging research for more than 30 years," said Ana Maria Cuervo, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of the new center, the Robert and Rene Belfer Chair for the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, and professor of developmental and molecular biology, of anatomy and structural biology and of medicine at Einstein. "Some of us got to know him when we were still graduate students and he came to scientific conferences to see the data as it was being developed. Paul's personal approach to science has made a big difference to many of us in the field of aging research and has contributed to the career development of many young investigators."

The funding, in the form of pilot and feasibility study grants, is targeted to several specific research projects: uncovering the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that protect humans against aging and age-related diseases, testing the effectiveness of the first-generation pro-longevity therapies, and developing novel preventive and therapeutic interventions against cellular aging in humans.

Drs. Barzilai and Cuervo are also co-directors of Einstein's Institute for Aging Research and, together with Dr. Vijg, of the Nathan Shock Center for the Basic Biology of Aging. Both centers are funded by the National Aging Institute, part of the National Institutes for Health.

Other Einstein researchers in the Paul F. Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research include Jill Crandall, M.D.; Mark Einstein M.D., M.S.; Claudia Gravekamp, Ph.D.; John Greally, M.B.B.Ch., Ph.D.; Meredith Hawkins, M.D.; Fernando Macian, M.D., Ph.D.; and Yousin Suh, Ph.D.

Founded in 1965 by Paul F. Glenn, The Glenn Foundation for Medical Research aims to extend the healthy productive years of life through research on the biological mechanisms of aging.

It won't be same without Jeter

The Yankees were already going it without Mariano Rivera this month, a strange sight to everyone who has followed baseball since the mid-1990s. But then Rivera was only out there for one or two innings per night.

Derek Jeter was the immovable object. The Yankees have played in 158 postseason games since 1996, and Jeter has started every single one of them. He?s the all-time postseason leader in games played by 30, in at-bats by 185 and in hits by 72. He?s also the postseason leader in runs scored and total bases. He?s first in singles, first in doubles, tied for first in triples and even third in homers.

And now he?s done for 2012 due to a fractured ankle.

When the Yankees take the field without Jeter in Sunday?s ALCS Game 2 against the Tigers, it?ll be the first time they?ve done so in the postseason since Oct. 8, 1995. That was a Game 5 loss to the Mariners in the ALDS. Randy Johnson famously came out of the pen and got the win in relief for Seattle.

Tony Fernandez was the Yankees? shortstop in that contest. Dion James played left field, believe it or not. A 20-year-old Alex Rodriguez pinch-ran for Seattle and got his first ever postseason at-bat in the contest (he grounded out). Tino Martinez was the guy he replaced (he was traded to the Yankees two months later).

That ALDS loss was the Yankees? first postseason series in 14 years. So, the Bombers haven?t actually won a postseason series without Jeter since 1981, when they prevailed in the ALDS and ALCS before losing to the Dodgers in the World Series.

The odds are stacked against them winning this one, too. They?re down 1-0 to the Tigers, they have Hiroki Kuroda going on short rest in Game 2 and they?ll be up against Justin Verlander in Game 3. Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson are all struggling mightily. And now they?ll be going with Jayson Nix or Eduardo Nunez at shortstop. It?d be a stunning achievement if they can somehow pull this one out.

Taiwan enters island fray, but China and Japan shrug

Boats from China and Japan chased each other around a set of disputed islets, setting off a diplomatic crisis. But when Taiwan entered the fray, neither side seemed to care.

The government in Taipei said last week it wanted to be a peacemaker in a sovereignty dispute involving a set of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Boats from China and Japan had chased each other around the islets they both claim, setting off mass protests in China that sent Sino-Japanese relations to a new low.

Then this week, Taiwan stopped talking about peace as 12 of its coast guard vessels escorted some 50 Taiwanese fishing boats to the islets, a sort passive-aggressive reminder of its own claim to islets that are 137 miles from Taiwan. Japan controls the islands, which it calls the Senkakus, and sprayed water cannons at Taiwan?s boats to keep them away.

But instead of setting off a diplomatic crisis, no one appears to be taking Taiwan too seriously ? at least not yet.

As far as China is concerned Taiwan is still part of China even though a Nationalist Party set up a rival government in Taipei after losing the Chinese civil war to the Communists in the 1940s. Beijing believes it will capture Taiwan someday even though the two sides are now self-ruled. By that logic any new territory Taiwan locks in would eventually go to China anyway.

At the same time, Japan and Taiwan can hardly live without each other. The former World War II colonizer is today one of Taiwan?s top five sources of tourism. Common Taiwanese take fashion, food, and shopping cues from peers in Tokyo while a strong contingent of conservative Japanese lawmakers who dislike communist China embraces Taiwan as a friendly fellow democracy.

?Japan is probably the only country in the world that attaches strategic importance to Taiwan,? says Bonnie Glaser, a senior fellow with the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies.

But Taiwan?s leadership neither expects to conquer the tiny islets nor broker a peace deal. President Ma Ying-jeou?s government is, instead, intent on using the issue to fulfill an often failed, 4-year-old domestic pledge: expand clout among major world nations through informal ties usually described as soft power.?

China forbids its 170-plus diplomatic allies from engaging Taiwan directly. But Taiwan may hope its idea to be a regional peacemaker?will stimulate scholarly debate in the United States, putting Taipei on the map of high-level academic conferences, says Alexander Huang, strategic studies professor with Tamkang University in Taiwan. ?Ma has taken at least an initiative and a moral high ground,? Mr. Huang says.

Taiwan has also avoided bashing China with heated language (letting Japan handle that) over the disputed islets, though they make separate claims. That puts the two sides in the same boat as seen from Beijing. ?It embraces the one-China concept in Beijing?s eyes,? Mr. Huang adds.

That edge will make China happier, and Taiwan wealthier, when the two sides bargain over trade tariffs or investment rules.?

Making good on that pledge to expand clout matters now as President Ma Ying-jeou sees approval ratings of just 15 to 25 percent this year so far because of domestic issues such as rising prices and stubborn wages. Term limits would stop Mr. Ma from seeking a new term in 2016, but his Nationalist Party could inherit any approval problems he leaves behind.

U.S. says Kazakh verdict silences opposition

ALMATY (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday accused Kazakhstan of using its justice system to "silence opposition voices" after a prominent critic of President Nursultan Nazarbayev was jailed for inciting violence.

Vladimir Kozlov was found guilty on Monday of colluding with a fugitive billionaire in a failed attempt to rally oil workers to bring down the government of the Central Asian state.

Kozlov, 52, was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison and had his property confiscated. He has called his case an "undisguised attempt" to stifle protest and labor rights.

"We note our concern regarding the prosecution of Vladimir Kozlov and the apparent use of the criminal system to silence opposition voices," the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

The criticism will hit home in Kazakhstan, which is a strategic ally of the United States in former Soviet Central Asia, a resource-rich region to the north of Afghanistan where Russia and China also vie for influence.

In more than two decades as president, Nazarbayev, 72, has eschewed democratic freedoms in pursuit of the oil-fuelled growth and investment that has made Kazakhstan's $185 billion economy the largest in Central Asia.

Authorities have tried in recent years to balance their desire to preserve stability with efforts to improve Kazakhstan's image on the world stage. The country chaired the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2010.

Kozlov was charged with orchestrating dissent among striking oil workers in the prelude to riots last December that killed 15 people. Two opposition activists tried alongside him were freed on suspended sentences.

Judge Berdybek Myrzabekov said Kozlov had politicized a labor dispute under orders from Mukhtar Ablyazov, an arch foe of Nazarbayev and the self-exiled former head of BTA bank.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry said the trial had been fair and open to everyone.

"I disagree strongly with the politically motivated insinuations about the alleged lack of a fair and impartial judgment," said Altay Abibullayev, spokesman for the ministry.

'PAYING THE PRICE'

Kazakhstan's marginalized opposition enjoys little support at home. Despite never having held an election judged fair by Western monitors, Nazarbayev is popular in the country of 17 million for presiding over stability relative to its neighbors.

But authorities have grown more wary of dissent after street protests in Russia, which shares a language with millions of Kazakhstan's citizens and remains the country's biggest trade partner.

"The hearing sends a clear message ... that any political activism which tries to channel social discontent into a political force against government, especially on the streets, is unwelcome," said IHS Global Insight analyst Lilit Gevorgyan.

Kozlov's Alga! party, long denied official registration, was ineligible to stand in a parliamentary election in January. The confiscation of his assets, including a dozen Alga! offices registered in his name, is a serious blow to the organisation.

"Kozlov is paying a heavy price for publicly criticizing the Kazakh government," said Mihra Rittmann, Europe and Central Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch, which also said the trial fell short of international standards.

US panel: China tech giants pose security threat

WASHINGTON (AP) ? American companies should avoid sourcing network equipment from China's two leading technology firms because they pose a national security threat to the United States, the House Intelligence Committee warned Monday.

The panel said in a report that U.S. regulators should block mergers and acquisitions in this country by Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp, among the world's leading suppliers of telecommunications gear and mobile phones.

Reflecting U.S. concern over cyber-attacks traced to China, the report also recommends that U.S. government computer systems not include any components from the two firms because that could pose an espionage risk.

"China is known to be the major perpetrator of cyber-espionage, and Huawei and ZTE failed to alleviate serious concerns throughout this important investigation. American businesses should use other vendors," the committee's chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich, told a news conference. He said the Chinese companies could not be trusted with access to computer networks that support everything from power grids to finance systems.

The recommendations are the result of a yearlong probe, including a congressional hearing last month in which senior Chinese executives of both companies denied posing a security threat and being under Beijing's influence.

Rogers said they are clearly tied to the Chinese government, and that allowing Huawei and ZTE to provide network equipment and services in America risks confidential consumer information and undermines core national security interests. He said the committee was not concerned about the sales of handsets that make up the bulk of their U.S. businesses, but rather network infrastructure where they have made fewer inroads.

William Plummer, vice president for external affairs for Huawei, said his company, a private entity founded by a former Chinese military engineer, was being victimized because of U.S. government concerns about China's government.

"Huawei is Huawei, Huawei is not China," he told reporters. "My company should not be held hostage to someone's political agenda."

Ahead of the report's release, China's foreign ministry said investment by telecommunications companies is mutually beneficial. "We hope the U.S. will do more to benefit the interests of the two countries, not the opposite," spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular briefing in Beijing Monday.

The panel's recommendations, however, will likely hamper Huawei and ZTE's ambitions to expand their businesses in America. Their products are used in scores of countries, including in the West.

The bipartisan report could also become fodder for a presidential campaign in which the candidates have been competing in their readiness to clamp down on Chinese trade violations. Republican Mitt Romney, in particular, has made it a key point to get tougher on China by designating it a currency manipulator and fighting abuses such as intellectual property theft.

Rogers said its release had nothing to do with politics, and was motivated by the need to alert U.S. companies of the risks. The committee's top Democrat, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, said U.S. companies should proceed with "their eyes wide open." He cited an estimate from the U.S. Cyber Command that more than $300 billion in U.S. trade secrets was stolen last year.

The committee says it received information from industry experts and current and former Huawei employees suggesting that Huawei, in particular, may be violating U.S. laws. The allegations include immigration violations and an alleged "pattern and practice" of Huawei using pirated software in its U.S. facilities.

Rogers said that information of alleged bribery by Huawei to gain a contract in the U.S. would be forwarded Tuesday to the FBI, and he was confident it would lead to an investigation. The committee also planned to forward information on allegations of "beaconing" from Huawei equipment to China ? that is the unauthorized transfer of information from a computer network.

Huawei, founded in 1987 has grown rapidly to become the world's second largest supplier of telecommunications network gear, operating in more than 140 countries. ZTE Corp, which is partly state-owned, is the world's fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer, with 90,000 employees worldwide.

The report says the companies failed to provide responsive answers about their relationships and support by the Chinese government, and detailed information about their operations in the U.S. It says Huawei, in particular, failed to provide thorough information, including on its corporate structure, history, financial arrangements and management.

Plummer said it wasn't clear what Rogers was referring in the allegations of "beaconing." He said Huawei had provided "endless data" to the investigation, which he contended was not objective. He said its recommendations could create "market-distorting trade policy" and risk the tens of thousands of American jobs Huawei helps to support through procurement from U.S.-based suppliers that totaled $6.6 billion last year.

The recommendations "undermine competition, which undermines innovation which drives up the price of your broadband," he said.

ZTE said a Sept. 25 letter to the committee, released Monday, that China's government had never requested access to ZTE's equipment.

"Direct exclusion of one or two identifiable Chinese companies is an obvious unfair trade practice and, as a practical matter, would not provide meaningful security for US telecom infrastructure systems," the letter says.

In justifying its investigation, the committee contended that Chinese intelligence services, as well as private companies and other entities, often recruit those with direct access to corporate networks to steal trade secrets and other sensitive data.

It warned that malicious hardware or software implants in Chinese-manufactured telecommunications components and systems could allow Beijing to shut down or degrade critical national security systems in a time of a crisis.

Huawei denies being financed to undertake research and development for the Chinese military, but the committee says it has received internal Huawei documentation from former employees showing the company provides special network services to an entity alleged to be an elite cyber-warfare unit within the People's Liberation Army.

The intelligence committee recommended that the government's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, bar mergers and acquisitions by both Huawei and ZTE. A multi-agency regulatory panel chaired by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, CFIUS screens foreign investment proposals for potential national security threats.

Last year, Huawei had to unwind its purchase of a U.S. computer company, 3Leaf Systems, after it failed to win CFIUS approval. Still, Huawei employs 1,700 people in the U.S., and business is expanding. U.S. revenues rose to $1.3 billion in 2011, up from $765 million in 2010.

ZTE has also enjoyed growth in its sale of mobile devices, although in recent months it has faced allegations about banned sales of U.S.-sanctioned computer equipment to Iran. The FBI is probing reports that the company obstructed a U.S. government investigation into the sales.

Physical Therapy Celebrates 60 Years of Excellence in Healthcare ...

The University of Michigan physical therapy (PT) program is 60 years old. Along with that anniversary, PT celebrating its move to the UM-Flint campus 30 years ago.

Physical therapy alumni, faculty, students, and staff will be celebrating with events this weekend in Ann Arbor and Flint.

Founded on the Ann Arbor campus in 1952, the program was almost eliminated in the early 1980s before public opposition and a concerted effort by UM-Flint and the Flint medical community persuaded the U-M Board of Regents to move the program to Flint.

University of Michigan Physical Therapy

University of Michigan Physical Therapy celebrates 60 years

Dick Darnell was the department head at that time. He is recognized as a pioneer in promoting physical therapy research in the state. Through his efforts for curriculum enhancement, UM-Flint awarded its first Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy degrees.

When the PT program moved to UM-Flint, it was originally housed in the Lapeer Street Annex, the former Surge Building located near Court Street and Lapeer Road. The location was also shared with the UM-Flint nursing department.

University of Michigan Physical Therapy celebrates 30 years on the Flint campus

In May 2002, PT moved into its current location in the William S. White Building. That was also the first year physical therapy awarded the doctor of physical therapy degree (DPT).

Over the past decade, the PT program has seen not only continued its growth on the Flint campus, it has reached across the country and across oceans to improve healthcare. In 2009, the department began to offer a fully online, transitional DPT Program. In late August 2011, the online Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy was offered to 16 graduate students from seven different Nigerian universities.

?We hope to improve healthcare in Nigeria by helping to raise the level of education provided to that country?s physical therapists (physiotherapists)? said Professor Lucinda (Cindy) Pfalzer, PT, Ph.D., FACSM, and FAPTA. ?Our goal is to offer the DPT for several years; at that point, there should be enough qualified physiotherapists in Nigeria to take over the teaching.?

The PT program has also received national attention for its research that is helping to lower treatment costs for some cancer patients.

In the past few years, PT has created partnerships with other prestigious medical organizations, including UM Medical Center PT on development of Neurologic and Pediatric residency programs.

This past year, the UM-Flint program was selected by the Veterans Affairs (VA) Ann Arbor Healthcare System to prepare physical therapy residents for advanced specialty practice. This program is aimed at developing advanced physical therapy practitioners who care for the whole patient, and are prepared for board certification in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

UM-Flint is the first university in the country to work with the VA on the Cardiopulmonary PT Residency. Only six universities were selected this year to provide special training.

President of the Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) Kake Jakubiak Kovacek, in noting the 60th anniversary of the PT program said, ?MPTA is very proud of the UM-Flint Physical Therapy Program tradition of excellence in all its programming?here at home and abroad. Your commitment to the profession, your focus on student-centered learning, and your belief in engaged citizenship throughout the globe certainly does UM- Flint PT proud, and likewise makes the MPTA profoundly glad that your program is part of our Chapter.?

The latest addition to the PT program is PT HEART, a student-led pro bono clinic that was established in January 2012. It is a clinic committed to providing physical therapy services and health education to the uninsured and under-insured of Genesee County. Students from the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and students from the Health Education program collaborate on this initiative.

To celebrate the anniversary, an alumni reunion and dinner will be held this coming Friday (Oct. 12, 2012), and will continue on Saturday (Oct. 13) in Ann Arbor at the U-M football game.

Happy 60th, Physical Therapy!

Pioneer anomaly solved? Interstellar travelers of the future may be helped by physicist's calculations

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? Interstellar travel will depend upon extremely precise measurements of every factor involved in the mission. The knowledge of those factors may be improved by the solution a University of Missouri researcher found to a puzzle that has stumped astrophysicists for decades.

"The Pioneer spacecraft, two probes launched into space in the early 70s, seemed to violate the Newtonian law of gravity by decelerating anomalously as they traveled, but there was nothing in physics to explain why this happened," said Sergei Kopeikin, professor of physics and astronomy in MU's College of Arts and Science. "My study suggests that this so-called Pioneer anomaly was not anything strange. The confusion can be explained by the effect of the expansion of the universe on the movement of photons that make up light and radio waves."

Beams of radio waves were sent to and bounced off the Pioneer spacecraft to measure the probes' movement. The time it took for the photons to complete a round trip was used to calculate the spacecrafts' distance and speed. Kopeikin's research suggests that the photons move faster than expected from the Newtonian theory thus causing the appearance of deceleration, though the craft were actually traveling at the correct speed predicted by the theory. The universe is constantly expanding and this alters the Earth-based observations of the photons bouncing off the spacecraft, causing the Pioneer probes to appear to slow down.

"Previous research has focused on mechanical explanations for the Pioneer anomaly, such as the recoil of heat from the craft's electrical generators pushing the craft backwards," Kopeikin said. "However that only explains 15 to 20 percent of the observed deceleration, whereas it is the equation for photons that explains the remaining 80-85 percent."

Physicists must be careful when dealing with propagation of light in the presence of the expansion of space, noted Kopeikin, since it is affected by forces that are irrelevant in other equations. For example, the expansion of the universe affects photons, but doesn't influence the motion of planets and electrons in atoms.

"Having accurate measurements of the physical parameters of the universe help us form a basis to make plans for interstellar exploration," Kopeikin said. "Discerning the effect of the expansion of the universe on light is important to the fundamental understanding of space and time. The present study is part of a larger on-going research project that may influence the future of physics."

The study "Celestial ephemerides in an expanding universe," was published in the journal Physical Review D.

THQ holds 'WWE '13' press event in New York City

NEW YORK ? With the release of "WWE '13" just weeks away, THQ held an exclusive press event at Skylight West Studios in Manhattan, N.Y., to announce new details about the highly anticipated video game. On hand for the festivities were WWE Legend Mick Foley, Raw General Manager AJ Lee and Paul Heyman. (PHOTOS)

Also present were THQ President Jason Rubin and Creative Director of WWE Games, Cory Ledesma, who kicked off the event with a 40-minute presentation to the numerous press outlets in attendance. In addition to showing off even more in-game features of the previously announced Attitude Era single-player campaign mode, Ledesma revealed that Paul Heyman had a big hand in bringing back that most beloved of times to gaming consoles.

"We went to Paul Heyman to provide some creative direction on the storylines that are taking place in the Universe mode experience," Ledesma told WWE.com. "We relied on Heyman heavily. It?s almost like he executive produced the Universe mode." Heyman?s involvement as the writer of the Attitude Era campaign suited the creative force behind ECW well. "I have a certain kinship with fans of that era," Heyman said, "So I got a chance to relive the Attitude Era and update it into the Universe mode for this game."

Since there's now an entire generation of WWE Universe members who were not old enough to remember the Attitude Era, Heyman says, " 'WWE '13' presents a double opportunity. For fans of the Attitude Era, this is a dream come true." Heyman added, "For fans that have never been exposed to the Attitude Era, they?re about to get their first taste of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, The Rock, The Brothers of Destruction, DX and Mankind. This is a great way to introduce these [Superstars] to the new generation of the WWE Universe."

Heyman's involvement behind the scenes wasn't the only major announcement that THQ had in store, however.

How High is Romney Bouncing?

Pew shows Mitt Romney leading by four points, the tracking polls paint a confusing picture, swing state polls show President Obama leading by a small margin, and fewer Obama supporters than Romney supporters are "extremely likely" to vote. Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter.?

RELATED: Obama Up in Virginia and Wisconsin, Down in Colorado

Findings:?Romney leads Obama nationally among likely voters by four points among likely voters, with 49 percent to Obama's 45 percent. Pollster:?Pew? Methodology:?Telephone interviews of 1,112 likely voters October 4 through 7 with a margin of error of +/-3.4 percentage points.? Why it matters:?This is a big reversal from a Pew poll last month which showed Obama up by eight, and is an indication that Romney's debate win has some effect on the overall state of this race.? Caveat:??Talking Points Memo's Tom Kludt?writes?other pollsters have shown a less dramatic post-debate shift.

RELATED: Washington Post Puts Obama Up 8 Points in Virginia

Findings:?Obama is up 50 percent to Romney's 45 percent?in Monday's Gallup tracking poll, but in a separate post Gallup notes that, since the debate, the race has moved into a tie. Rasmussen's tracking poll has the race tied with each candidate at 48 percent each. Pollster:?Gallup, Rasmussen?? Methodology:?For Gallup: Seven day rolling average of telephone interviews with 3,050 registered voters with a margin of error of +/-2 percentage points. For Rasmussen: Telephone survey of 500 likely voters a night in a three day rolling average with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points.? Why it matters:?So these numbers are kind of baffling. Business Insider's Joseph Weisenthal tweeted: "Wait, seriously. Gallup Obama +5? Joke, right?" Now, Gallup's seven-day average ? October 1 through 7 ? gives Obama the five point lead whereas its numbers from October 4 through 6, after the debate, show the race tied. The Huffington Post's Mark Blumenthal?said the debate has showed a "dramatic tightening" in tracking polls. That said, The New Republic's?Nate Cohn?tweeted, "Between Rasmussen, Gallup, and PPP's tweets about their nightly samples, there's a strong case that Romney's bounce was short-lived." Cohn previously explained that "some of the worst news for Mitt" is coming from Rasmussen which "initially lurched in Romney's direction" and now shows a tied race.? Caveat:?It's kind of clear at this point that nothing's really clear.?

RELATED: Ryan Hasn't Yet Won Wisconsin for Romney

Findings:?Obama is up by 2 points in Iowa and 1 point in Colorado according to Rasmussen. Obama's up by 3 in Virginia, according to?Public Policy Polling. Pollster:?Rasmussen, Rasmussen, Public Policy Polling? Methodology:?For?Rasmussen Iowa: Automated poll of 500 likely Iowa voters October 7 with a margin of error of +/-4.5 percentage points. For Rasmussen Colorado: Automated poll of 500 likely Colorado voters October 7 with a margin of error of +/-4.5 percentage points. For PPP: Automated poll of 725 likely Virginia voters October 4 through 7 with a margin of error of +/-3.7 percent.? Why it matters:?Now these aren't huge leads for the president, but also aren't putting him behind Romney?as some did at the end of last week. "Rasmussen's decent results for the president were consistent with a strong polling day in the national tracker, as well as in PPP's poll of Virginia," Cohn says. Though he notes that in general polls have shown that Romney "has made gains since the debate," he adds: "Rasmussen has conducted more post-debate polling than any other source, so it's worth noting that their data is driving the numbers back in Obama's direction."? Caveat:?Rasmussen typically leans Republican and PPP leans Democratic.

RELATED: A Guide to 2012's Swing States

Findings:?While 86 percent of those who support Romney say they are "extremely likely" to vote, only 73 percent who support Obama do. Similarly, 84 percent of Republicans say they are "extremely likely" to vote while only 76 percent of Democrats do.? Pollster:?The Tarrance Group and Lake Research Partners for Politico/GWU? Methodology:?Survey of 1,000 registered likely voters October 1 through 4 with a margin of error of +/-3.1 percentage points.? Why it matters:?If Obama's supporters don't get out and vote that's bad news for the president. In fact, the poll shows that Romney leads Obama 52 percent to 46 percent among those deemed "extremely likely" to vote, where the race is nearly even among just likely voters with Obama a point ahead. Politico's James Hohmann explains: "The electorate is deeply divided and polarized, which makes?2012?look increasingly like a base election. Whoever runs up their vote count among their core supporters is likely to prevail, which is why these numbers are so significant."? Caveat:?"Most of the poll?s calls were made before Romney?s strong performance at the first presidential debate in Denver," Hohmann says.

Japan car sales in China tumble, hit by islands row

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japanese car makers reported tumbling sales in China for September, confirming the impact of a territorial row between the two countries and raising concerns that their market share in the world's biggest auto market will continue to shrink.

A Toyota Motor Corp spokesman said on Tuesday that sales in China fell 48.9 percent in September from a year earlier, while Honda Motor Co reported its sales in China fell 40.5 percent.

Nissan Motor Co's China auto sales, excluding imports, fell 34.6 percent in September from a year earlier, according to its China venture partner Dongfeng Motor Group Co , and Suzuki Motor Corp said sales to dealerships in China fell 42.5 percent last month from a year earlier.

Violent protests and calls for boycotts of Japanese products broke out across China in mid-September after Japan bought two of the East China Sea islands, known as the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku in Japanese, from their private owners.

Analysts say sales could continue to weaken as long as the diplomatic tension remains.

"We had cut our 2012 sales forecast of Japanese cars by 100,000, but it seems to be way too conservative now," said John Zeng, Asia Pacific director for industry consultancy LMC Automotive.

"We had previously expected them to sell 3.04 million, but it will be great if they could move 3 million."

Toyota and its two local Chinese partners sold a total of about 44,100 vehicles in September, the company's Beijing-based spokesman Takanori Yokoi said.

For the first nine months of this year, sales by Toyota and its partners totaled about 640,200 vehicles, up 4.6 percent from the year-ago period, Yokoi said.

Smaller rival Mazda Motor Corp said last week that its China sales tumbled 35 percent in September from a year earlier.

Among the Japanese carmakers, Nissan is the most exposed to the Chinese market, followed by Honda and Mazda.

In 2011, Nissan sold 883,000 vehicles in the world's biggest car market, which accounted for about 27 percent of the vehicles the firm sold globally. For Honda, that ratio was about 20 percent, while for Mazda, it was around 18 percent.

For Toyota, Japan's biggest automaker, China accounted for about 12 percent of the vehicles it sold globally in 2011.

Market share of Japanese brands stood at 21.2 percent at the end of August, down from 21.6 percent in 2011, according to official data. German brands advanced to 23.3 percent from 21.3 percent, while market share of Korean brands rose to 9.3 percent from 9 percent during the period.

The dramatic fall-off in demand for Japanese vehicles has been an unexpected boon for other foreign brands. In September, BMW's China sales surged 55 percent, Audi by 20 percent and Hyundai Motor by 15 percent.
