Avril Lavigne -- Take Me Out to the F*@&%+ Ball Game!

Avril Lavigne was all smiles when she through out the first pitch before last night's Tampa Bay? Rays game, but she lobbed a few four-letter words at the crowd when a technical glitch messed with her post-game concert.

0529_avril_AP
According to local reports, Avril's mic didn't work at the start of her show ... and she responded to the cavalcade of boos by yelling obscenities at crowd.

Things were apparently so bad, the public address announcer got on the horn afterward and apologized to the crowd, saying, "That's not what the Tampa Bay Rays are about."

Calls to Lavigne's rep were not returned.

Beverly Hills Property ? Want to invest in Real Estate? 7 ...

Tags:Another, Before, Course, Estate, Invest, Investment, must, Questions, Real, want, Yourself.

You???ve heard that investing in real estate can be very lucrative.  Before you get started, here are seven questions to ask yourself.

1.       Is this a hobby or a business?

Ask yourself why you want to invest in real estate.

-          Do you want another income stream

-          Do you want to build equity in a house

-          How many sellers and buyers do you want to speak with each day/week/month

-          How much time do you have to invest in real estate

-          Are you working a full time job

-          Are you retired looking for additional income

-          What do you want to do with your time?

If you want to build a real estate investing business, then you need to treat it like a business.

Are you going to be a landlord?  Then you need to determine how much time you want to spend collecting rent, maintaining the property, making repairs, answering tenant calls late at night, etc.

Or have a property management company handle the tenants and maintenance?  Then you need to determine who you will hire to manage your property and how much you will pay them.  Typically a property management company will charge one months rent to locate a tenant and then charge 8%-10% of the monthly rent for collecting the rent and answering all calls from the tenant.  You still need to set aside a reserve fund for maintenance.

Maybe you don???t want to be a landlord and you want to wholesale property.  Then you need to develop a buyer???s list of buyers who have the cash to purchase the house.  You will still need to work with sellers to locate properties, get it under contract.  You then need to get your wholesale buyer to sign the assignment of contract.  And you have to make sure you follow up with the closing agent to make sure the deal is funded by the wholesale buyer and the deal closes.  You will get your assignment fee once the deal closes.

Here are the questions you need to ask yourself.

-          Do you want to be a landlord

-          How much time do you want to put into real estate investing

-          Do you want to build a business or just make some extra money once in a while

2.       Do you want to work directly with sellers?

There are many investors who want to get into the real estate investing business who don??? t have prior sales experience.  Yes, you can call homeowners directly and negotiate the purchase of their home, it is possible.  It???s even easier when you are speaking with a motivated seller.  I mean a seller that is really motivated to sell, not someone who wants to sell, wants full price for their home and just doesn???t want to wait for the all cash buyer that will pay retail price.

Are you someone that wants to help these motivated sellers?  Do you have it in you to hear their stories over and over?  Some of these sellers will break your heart and you will want to help them.  You have to make sure that you only work with those that you can help and make a profit for yourself.  Just because someone is willing to deed you their house does not mean it is a good deal.

Think about a situation where the seller has two mortgages, judgments, and liens on the property.  Yes, you can work this as a short sale and get the liens removed and negotiate with the lender to get a smaller settlement for the payoff of the mortgage.  You need to decide if you want to put in the time and effort it takes to negotiate the short sale and get the liens removed.  I have seen investors in the short sale negotiation process with the lender for anywhere from 2 months to 18 months.  Do you want wait months to close the deal?

You need to decide if you want to work directly with homeowners or have someone handle this for you.

3.       Do you want to work directly with buyers?

Once you have a house under contract, it is time for you to find your buyer.  The best thing you can do is to build a buyers list before you have a property.  Find out where the buyers want to live, and then go find a house in that area.  It is much easier to find a house for a buyer than it is to find a buyer for a house.

Do you want to take calls from the buyers?  They call at all hours, while you are having dinner, before you wake up in the morning, when you are driving to work, etc.  Are you willing to drop everything you are doing to take a call from a buyer?

4.       Where are you going to get the money?

This is one of the biggest concerns of all real estate investors, where to get the money.

Yes, you can buy a house with little of your own money.  Some of the techniques to do this are:

-          Buy the house subject-to the existing mortgage

-          Have the seller carryback the financing in the form of a note

-          Lease/Option the house

You can also build relationships with other people who have money, such as

-          Private lenders

-          Hard Money Lenders

-          Mortgage Brokers

The biggest money concern that you never hear about is where to get the money to market your business.  You can buy a house subject-to the existing mortgage.  But how do you find that house?  You have to continue to MARKET, MARKET, MARKET.

Marketing costs money.  That is what most of the gurus forget to tell you.  You hear all about how you can buy a house with no money down or little money down.  What they don???t tell you is that you have to spend money on marketing to find the house, and money on marketing to find the buyer.

Before you get started, put together a marketing plan so you know how much money you need to get started.

5.       Do you want chunks of cash or cash flow?

What is the reason you want to invest in real estate?  Are you interested in getting chunks of cash? Cash Flow?  Or Both?

What you want out of real estate investing will help you determine what type of real estate investing you want to get into.

If you are looking for chunks of cash, you have a couple of choices.  Consider wholesaling or rehabbing (fix and flip).

If you are looking for cash flow, consider landlording, selling a home with seller financing, or be a private lender.

6.       Where do you want to invest?

It???s easiest to start local since you are familiar with house values and have access to local experts to answer your questions.

7.       What is your plan to learn more about RE investing?

The most successful real estate investors are those who keep up with the changes in the industry and are constantly learning new techniques.

One of the best things you can do is find a local mentor, someone who is making money investing in your local market.  Ideally they should be investing in the area that you are interested in.  If you want to wholesale properties, find a local investor who is wholesaling properties.  Not only will you ask them to mentor you, but they may buy some of your properties from you.

If you are interested in commercial real estate, then you shouldn???t spend your time with an investor who deals only with single family homes.

Always continue to learn about Real estate investing.  There are many gurus that travel the country teaching real estate investing.  Ask the people at your REIA whose products they have purchased and whether or not it helped them in their business.

First determine the niche you want to work to get started.  Learn everything you can about that specific niche and create income in that niche before you move on to the next niche. Don???t get distracted by the ???shiny ball??? syndrome.

Real Estate investing can be very lucrative.  You need to create a plan, continue to educate yourself, and continue to market for sellers and buyers.

How Can Proper Nutrition Affect Your Health? ? ArticleAudit.com

Average American?s nutritional habits are considered as one of the worst amongst any of the first world countries. In a country that has a surplus amount of food unequal to any other nation in the world; most of us are suffering from malnutrition, the reason, Fast Food.

The obesity rate in the United States is alarmingly high and is climbing. Despite the various education programs and media coverage about the damaging effect of poor diet, we continue to flock to the nearest fast food joint. Most people are even reluctant to even consider taking a look at the diet that they consume, let alone making any significant changes to it.

The sad truth is that we are addicted to fast food. They lure us with their fat filled sugar loaded items that slowly kills us. It?s not just the fast food joints, but even the regular restaurants that offer overly large portions and an assortment of desserts to entice even the strongest strength of will. And at the end we are left wondering why our wardrobe is getting small each year. Our lack of restraint and discipline is having a negative effect on our health. Even those that try to stick to a healthy diet loose track and are found giving excuses like a little won?t hurt.

We are soon becoming victims of malnutrition with the formation of diseased cells in our bodies. These diseased cells have the potential to turn into full-grown diseases and if adequate measures are not taken, the growth becomes irreparable. We form our eating habits during our life time and most adverse effects are seldom felt during the young age. Obesity is one of the exceptions. Child obesity has become a very serious problem, not just in the United States but all over the world. If proper care is not taken at the appropriate time, it can lead to a lifetime of major health and weight problems.

The calorie loaded and fatty foods are too good to resist. They offer a false sense of comfort in our modern stressful life. It momentarily makes us feel good when we munch on such food items ignoring the adverse effects it can have on our bodies. Heartburn, nausea, allergies, constipation and obesity are just some of the symptoms that are a warning of what lies ahead of us if we continue with our inadequate eating habits.

Nutrition is something that one cannot ignore, because if ignored, it can lead to some serious health issues that could turn out to be very expensive.

The good and bad of storage benchmarking

May 23, 2011

In my post last week, I talked about new record-breaking SPC-1 performance benchmark results for TMS's new RamSan-630. Judging by the email response, that lead many of you to wonder exactly what the Storage Performance Council is and what makes those results any more interesting than other third-party storage benchmarks.

In a field as complex as enterprise storage, building testing mechanisms that accurately reflect real life and provide any real value to end-users is fantastically difficult. With such an incredibly wide range of enterprise storage workloads and products, it's impossible to build a benchmark that has any hope of resembling all of them.

That said, the testing mechanisms used by the SPC are among the best -- not only due to the thoroughness of the tests themselves, but because the documentation and auditing required to submit a public result is quite elaborate. In fact, the documentation is often more interesting to a prospective storage buyer than the performance results themselves.

Who is the SPC?

Apple enlists iPads for retail signage

(Credit: Macstories)

Confirming reports from earlier this week, Apple is moving forward on plans to put iPads to work in its retail stores, not just as display models, but as tools to sell its other products.

In Australia and other countries, where it's already Sunday, Apple stores have opened with a new setup that makes use of iPads as informational tools to customers around the store, taking the place of the paper-based informational signs next to the company's products.

As blog Mac Prices Australia has photographed at a local store, and picked up by Macstories, the encased iPads display information about nearby products such as prices and configurations to let customers compare and customize models. There's also the option to page a retail employee to come over to provide assistance.

The new configuration gives Apple quite a bit of leeway as far as keeping information updated, no matter what product is nearby. It's also got the potential to let stores run with less staff on the floor, as an employee can be called to answer questions whenever customers alert the company through the app that's running on the iPads.

Apple's plans to give its stores an iPad-centric digital revamp were unearthed earlier this week with multiple reports. Boy Genius Report posted a story earlier this week noting that Apple store employees could not take off time during the weekend and were required to attend a training session on Sunday. Following that, Apple Insider snagged photos of a stack of iPads delivered to one Apple store to be used on the sales floor. 9to5mac on Friday briefly posted screenshots of an app that was to be used by employees to run transactions, though those photos were removed shortly thereafter at Apple's request.

The changes come just a few days after the 10th anniversary of Apple's retail stores. Apple has since gone on to open more than 320 locations around the world, with most of those in the U.S. In its most recent quarterly earnings call and in briefings from the past several years, the company has said that around half of Mac buyers at the company's retail stores are buying a Mac machine for the first time.

Here's a video of what the new system looks like in stores next to various products, via Macotakara:

New world creation of animation program | Free Articles

An animation is the swift presentation of a progression of some certain images of 2D or 3D artwork or model positions in order to create a figment of your imagination of movement. The effect is a visual delusion of action due to the occurrence of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in several ways. So it is a technique of establishing soul to the inanimate, lifeless or dull objects and drawings. There are many methods of presenting an animation program. But there have many variations also. However, it needs some equipment to show the sequence of images in motion.

Some six or seven decade before ?cels? techniques was used for animation process. In this process the animators must drew the photographs into the sheets. They made little difference from one drawing then before and thus they create the chronological illusion of movement. This long process of creating an animation show is now become obsolete fully. In these contemporary advanced days the drawing pictures are either scanned into the computer or directly drawn into the computer system with the help of various drawing software. Thus Animation Programs are encompassed varieties of making headway techniques like 2D animation and 3D animation programs.

2D Animation programs are developed on the computer using two graphics: bitmap graphics and vector graphics. Bitmap or raster graphics is a data structure that generally represents rectangle grid of pixel and point of colour. In vector graphics images can be changed editing screen objects which are then saved as modifications to the mathematical formulae. This 2D animating program also includes analog computer animation, flash animation, and power point animation.

3D Animation format is a digital representation and controlled by an animator. To manipulate a web it is given a digital undernourished structure that can be used to control the net. This is a chaining process ordered in a sequence. There are various techniques that come into the compass of the category. The techniques that fall under the category of energetic 2d dimension are mathematical functions like gravity, particle replication, simulated fur or hair, different kind of effects like effect of water or the effect of fire. Use of motion capture effect can be shown in a well made 3d animation. All these components have made this animation program rich and undistinguished from the real life movies.

There are various differences between 2d and 3d figure. The techniques like morphing, twining, and onion skinning are used in 2d category. In case of 3d animation, it involves digital modeling of characters. The steps that are engrossed in this process character sketching, character modeling, scene building, texturing lightning camera set up, rendering, editing and mixing and so forth.

In spite of filled with various aspects, animation softwares are easy and simple to understand. But it must require the expert knowledge and experience to handle this kind of softwares. If you have a good concept and control over the 2d animation, you can step to the next to focus on the 3d animation program.

Reading - VitAL Magazine | Inspiration For The Modern Business

It is an exciting time for FrontRange, with the recent launch of its SaaS2 software-as-a-Service solution as well as new versions of its IT Asset Management on-premise products. VitAL caught up with the company?s vice president, EMEA, Ian McEwan.

Headquartered in Pleasanton, California in the USA, FrontRange is a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT Service Management, IT Asset Management, and Customer Service Management solutions. The company says that these solutions enable IT and Services Transformation by providing enterprise-class capabilities that deliver fast time to benefit, high ease of use, and rapid return on investment.

With an award winning tradition and recognised as a leader by industry analysts, the company?s products and solutions are used by over 13,000 customers in more than 80 verticals and 45 countries to quickly improve interactions with external and internal clients and achieve better business results.

Ian McEwan is responsible for FrontRange?s sales operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has over 15 years experience in the IT sector, primarily in the Help Desk and Service Management markets, and a successful history of sales management to Fortune 100/500 customers.

Prior to joining FrontRange, McEwan held a number of senior sales and management positions with Peregrine, BMC, IBM and Vignette.? He is currently playing a central role in the company?s continued expansion in the EMEA region.

VitAL: What are the origins of the company; how did it start and develop; how has it grown and how is it structured?

Ian McEwan: FrontRange Solutions is headquartered in California, with the hub of its European operations in Newbury, UK. The company realises around 45 percent of its global revenues in the EMEA region, and has all major functions (engineering, sales, marketing and support) based in the UK and Germany.

It was incorporated in 2000, when the companies behind HEAT helpdesk and GoldMine customer relationship management (CRM) solutions merged. The company capitalised on its dominance in the SME helpdesk market to launch its fully fledged IT Service Management solution in 2005.

More recently it has further expanded its portfolio with an IT Asset Management solutions division with the acquisition of Enteo (developers of the solution now known as FrontRange Desktop & Server Management) in 2007 and Centennial Software (FrontRange Discovery and License Manager) in 2008.

VitAL: What is the company?s specialist area or product group?

IM: The FrontRange Solutions portfolio spans three core areas of a company?s operations: IT Service Management, IT Asset Management and Customer Service. All three are critical to our and our customers? success and it?s this breadth of offering that we feel is our real strength. To complement this, we recently launched our SaaS2 (Solutions-as-a-Service model.) This enables customers to choose the most appropriate method of technology acquisition both today and in the future ? FrontRange is the only vendor offering a fast and painless transition between SaaS and on-premise solutions.

VitAL: Is that specialisation to make the best use of skills in the company or because it fits the company?s world view or has it simply evolved?

IM: For most organisations, public or private, the service they deliver to their internal and external customers is paramount. Without delivering excellent IT services, staff can?t function; without delivering excellent customer care, the organisation has no future. This is why the FrontRange portfolio has evolved to incorporate an integrated suite of solutions that enable organisations to manage their IT assets, IT service delivery and external facing customer service ? three inter-linked disciplines that are all critical to the viability of the organisation.

The nature of the solution range is far from accidental. For example, the acquisitions of Enteo and Centennial Software both brought with them not only an important additional revenue stream to FrontRange, but they also strengthened our Service Management solutions with asset and configuration management being natural extensions to the solution.

VitAL: How has any specialisation influenced the company?s general stance?

IM: Rather than specialism, it is the breadth of the solution portfolio that stands FrontRange apart from rival competitors. That breadth is represented both in terms of the sheer capability of the solutions on offer ? everything from PC and software auditing, through to desktop management through to fully ITIL-compatible service ? as well as the technologies employed to deliver these solutions to the customer ? be it on-premise or through the cloud (SaaS).

VitAL: who are the company?s main customers today and in the future?

IM: Because of the nature of the solution portfolio and its routes to market, the FrontRange customer base is incredibly broad in character. From large enterprises who use the FrontRange ITSM and Desktop Server Management solutions to manage their IT operations down to SMEs who rely on the GoldMine CRM solution to maximise the profitability of each and every customer interaction.

Tomorrow, this breadth of customer base will continue and may become broader still as more organisations like to implement hybrid SaaS / on-premise solutions.

VitAL: What is the company?s business model, ie, does it select a market and then design solutions to meet the needs of that market or does it specialise in particular solutions and seek markets where those solutions are needed?

IM: The majority of FrontRange solutions are, by their nature, horizontal rather than vertical. The customer service or IT asset management challenges facing an organisation in one industry are unlikely to differ greatly from a company in another vertical. As such, it is fair to say that the FrontRange portfolio is shaped by looking for common issues faced by many organisations and how a solution can be created to deliver the maximum benefit with the minimal customisation.

Some solution areas such as IT Service Management are always going to be subject to some ?tailoring? to the individual organisations? needs, but the difference is how the solution is engineered to accommodate this level of personalisation while still retaining its core product differentiators.

VitAL: How is the company encouraging social responsibility in its customers and the wider world?

IM: The green agenda, and becoming more conscious of energy use in general, has some close synergies with IT Asset Management and so this is one potential route for the FrontRange solution portfolio moving forward.

VitAL: How does the company communicate with vendors and customers?

IM: FrontRange employs a true multi-channel communications strategy for partners and customers. This ranges from the open FrontRange ?Connect? forum to customer and partner-specific support sites, where they can access comprehensive knowledge bases as well as the latest product downloads. Telephone support for both technical and commercial questions is only a call away and customers and partners are both encouraged to take advantage of FrontRange?s regular roadshows and in-office meetings.

VitAL: What does the product range cover?

IM: As outlined above, there are essentially three pillars to the FrontRange product portfolio: Service Management, IT Asset Management and Customer Service. Within these areas there are a number of distinct product areas, from audit to license management, voice enablement to web-self service ? but each and every component of the portfolio contributes an important role towards the overall aim of enabling organisations to maximise the productivity of their staff and IT operations as well as leverage the full value of their customers.

VitAL: What is your view of the current state of IT Service Management and IT in business and the economy in general, the challenges and the opportunities?

IM: It is somewhat of a clich? to say ?do more with less?, but with IT budgets generally static there is a strong need to make IT service delivery more efficient and to ensure that each and every pound allocated to IT is spent wisely. Integration and automation are the keywords here, and the FrontRange portfolio is ideally placed to deliver both, with integrated IT Service Management and Asset Management. Automating key tasks such as software application deployment or restoring user profiles from a central console integrated with the ITSM system can provide a massive labour saving for IT.

For organisations with outdated ITSM systems in place, but without the budgets to replace them with new solutions, vendors like FrontRange now offer an easier way to access new technologies with SaaS-based versions of their solutions. This keeps the initial acquisition costs to a minimal level, but enables the customer to move to an on-premise solution as their needs demand in the future.

VitAL: What are the future plans for the business?

IM: It is an exciting time for FrontRange, with the recent launch of our SaaS2 solutions as well as new versions of our IT Asset Management on-premise products. The future is to grow these solutions in parallel so that customers can access the solutions they need through the delivery methods that are right for their businesses both today and in the future.

VitAL: Ian McEwan, thank you very much

Guest Blogger and 'American Idol' Alum Elliott Yamin: 'I'm Baffled By The Final Two'

After months of competition, more than a dozen eliminations and a trip home that culminates in one giant love-fest with attendance in the tens of thousands, Top 3 week is American Idol's most fulfilling hurdle, no doubt, and also its most exhausting. The few that have sat in that position -- ?be it on the couch or a golden stool -- recall doing their damnedest to table the stress of the competition while trying to concentrate on the three songs plus group numbers they would perform on the finale. Elliott Yamin was one of the fortunate few to make it that far when he came in third on Season 5. Alas, a strained rendition of Journey's classic "Open Arms" would send him packing. But while he gets what the final 3 were going through on Thursday night -- "an hour of nerves" -- he doesn't quite understand Idol's current country predicament. Read on for Elliott's assessment... ? ?

I really don?t know what to make of the Top 3 results last night. On one hand, I don?t want to take credit away from the final two since we all know how hard it is to make it on that show and all the work that goes into it week in, week out. Then again, when it comes to country music -- and I?ll risk sounding ignorant here -- it?s the most loyal fan-base and the most widespread, so I think that bodes well for cats like Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, who both have that twangy country style to their voice. Look at what Carrie Underwood has done. That lane of music is still very much thriving and with the help of a show like American Idol, I think they go hand in hand.

Clearly it wasn?t about the voice this season, because if it was, Haley Reinhart would in that finale. I think she?s got a real sexy tone and I?ve been a fan of hers since jump street. My favorite moment of the whole entire season was that jazzy number she did with Casey Abrams ? it showed people that there are cool jazz songs! And I thought she really rocked the Led Zeppelin song, but ?You Oughtta Know? was a bad choice. I didn?t like the way she sounded on it. That was a weird one.

As for Scotty, the cool thing about him is that he?s been allowed to stay in his own lane, where in the past, you?ve had so many country singers that have been forced to sing all these different genres of music. He?s been able to basically sing a country song every week. I thought ?Amazed? was a wise choice on his part, although I?m not a big fan of his voice. It doesn?t wow me -- there?s nothing unique about it, other than it?s really deep.

Lauren?s second performance of The Band Perry?s ?If I Die Young? was her best of the night. Leeann Womack's ?I Hope You Dance? is a really beautiful song, but I don?t know if she did it much justice. She wasn?t tender enough for it. That?s the one thing all season that?s been bugging me about Lauren: she doesn?t know yet how to emote. It?s like she?s not quite understanding what she?s singing about. It?s something I had to learn and I?m still learning even after the show. Anyone who can sing can get up there, but you also have to make that connection. I think it comes down to one thing with Lauren: age. She doesn?t know how to use her voice yet. She hasn?t found her identity as a vocalist because she hasn?t been around that long.

To be honest, I?m kind of baffled by the final two. I?m sure Jimmy Iovine will find hits for these kids, but I just don?t see anything that unique about them, and I think we?re learning more and more that oftentimes, it takes a lot more than just a good voice, or even a great voice. I don?t hear a great voice in either one and it?s a singing competition.

In a perfect world, Lauren and Scotty would have split the vote allowing Haley a chance, but a multitude of things could explain the final two. For one thing, the show is really gearing towards the younger and younger singer. Youth is a big part of this business when it comes to discovering and developing talent. And there?s the country realm, which is it?s huge in America -- bigger than people realize. You can see from Lauren and Scotty?s hometown visits; it?s like they were headlining their own country concerts.

And that?s another reason for the sometimes weak performances on Top 3 -- like when I totally butchered Journey?s ?Open Arms? -- it?s because that week is really busy. And these three seem busier than ever! I remember that week we were whisked away on a private jet to be home for 20 hours, we get back home, step off and shoot B-roll with Clive Davis, we go right into the studio to do background vocals for group song? I think it all caught up for me and I was ready for whatever. But when they announced my name, I didn?t give the Chris Daughtry or a Haley look -- I wasn?t that surprised.

But I also remember feeling a lot of pride. I couldn?t wait until they showed my video package, I felt like I really represented the city well and I was real loose. It?s like being on a plane with turbulence, I?m always calm because it?s out of your hands. If the plane is going to take a nose dive, there?s nothing you can do about it. Not that I?m comparing a nose-diving 747 to Top 3 night? In all honesty, Top 3 was probably the least nerve-wracking because I knew that no matter what happened, I had exceeded all the goals that I set out to accomplish. I made everyone proud, even myself.

One of the great things about Idol is, when the show?s doing well, or when anybody from the show has success, it gives the rest of the Idols the opportunity to keep doing their thing, This year, they worked really hard at developing these contestants and getting them ready for the real work of the music business. I thought that was really interesting, and even when I wasn?t so impressed with the talent, I was with the way the show harnessed that talent.

So who?ll win this thing? I?m going with Scotty. He seems to be the heartthrob, he?s very well-liked and he?s got the more unique voice of the two, I guess. They?re both really good kids. The night that Casey got saved, they invited me, Mikalah Gordon, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns to give the kids advice on what to expect on tour and in this business. They were supposed to air it and never did, but it was really cool. I had a good time talking to Scotty and Lauren, who was really sweet. The best of luck to them, it?s another season in the books.?

The Origination of Indian Astrology ? Self Improvement

The Origination of Indian Astrology

India has always been known as a country with unity in diversity, a country that one of the most extravagant history and definitely for being a country with lots of knowledge and heritage. Indian astrology and Indian astrologers along with Indian pilgrimage locations have tremendous influence on people in India and worldwide. Indian astrology is more famously known as Jyotish or Jyotisa. These words have been derived from the Sanskrit term from jy?tis, which means light, heavenly body. Astrology is known to have tremendous affect on people all around the globe. In fact, the advent of science has also not been able to demean the position of astrology and astrologers. Different countries have different methods of astrology but the main point about astrology is to have faith in it. One needs to have faith in the concept of astrology to witness the miracles of it.

Indian astrology is also referred to as Vedic astrology. The Vedic system of astrology is one of the six disciplines of Vedanga, which are the secondary disciplines of Vedic religion. As such, Jyotish has historically been part of a continuous holistic approach to living and an integral practice based on the ancient spiritual tradition of India. The foundation of jyotish or Indian astrology is the notion of the various bandhu of the Vedas or scriptures, which is the connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm. Its main purpose is to offer humanity a means to understand the role and expression of karma in individual and collective life. In fact, a major belief among Hindus is that humans have fortune and misfortune in life because of the kind of karma or in other words, deeds that they do in their present lives. Many use Jyotish to understand the various setbacks in life due to the influence of planets and thereby, perform different religious ceremonies to mitigate or avoid the pain of separation in life.

The practice of Indian astrology has been done for over hundreds of years. In fact, the very history of India shows the various involvements of Vedic astrology and how people tend to believe in it and how they led their lives as directed by astrologers. In fact, the very practice of Vedic astrology primarily relies on the visible zodiacs, which is highly different from the tropical zodiacs that are used in Western astrology in that an ayanamsa adjustment is made for the gradual precession of the vernal equinox. The zodiacs that are used in Vedic or Indian astrology are used to compute the ascendant, although the end results are converted to sidereal ascendants.

Vedic astrology or in other words, Indian astrology includes more than a few fine distinct sub-systems of interpretation and prediction with unique sacred elements that are just not found in Western astrology, for example its specific system of lunar mansions that are called the nakshatras, encompassing a pantheon of archetypal deities. An astrologer studies and understands the positions of these nakshatras and then they select auspicious days for several ceremonies. Indian astrology, just like the history and the richness of the Indian heritage, proves to be quite rich and full of mystery.

Coffee now doubleplusgood! Also, it prevents cancer. - io9

Tim Barribeau ?Coffee now doubleplusgood! Also, it prevents cancer. We recently discovered that coffee may be linked to lower breast cancer rates. Now it looks like guys have something to celebrate too ? new research has linked coffee do a dropped risk of prostate cancer. Once again the complicated mixture of ingredients has shown to be beneficial, and this time even decaf drinkers get it.

The study was performed by the Harvard School of Public Health, whose researchers followed almost 50,000 men over more than 20 years, and studied the link between self-reported lifestyle habits and diseases. What they found is that, after adjusting for other bad habits that heavy java drinkers tend to have (smoking, low levels of exercise), they were at a lower risk for prostate cancer than the controls, especially for lethal, aggressive versions of the cancer.

Those who downed six or more cups of coffee a day had a 20% lower risk of developing any sort of prostate cancer, and a 60% lower risk of lethal prostate cancer. Even those who were more moderate, drinking one to three cups per day, were 30% less likely to have lethal prostate cancer ? and the benefits were the same, regardless if the coffee was decaffeinated or not.

The researchers admit that this needs to be compared to other population groups, and that they don't know the method of action, but it's one more vice that's going to make us live longer.

DNA repair system affects colon cancer recurrence and survival

Friday, May 20, 2011

Colorectal cancer patients with defects in mismatch repair--one of the body's systems for repairing DNA damage--have lower recurrence rates and better survival rates than patients without such defects, according to a study published online May 19th in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

About 15% of colorectal cancers are associated with mismatch repair defects. Some defects are caused by the inherited gene mutations found in Lynch syndrome and others occur by chance, or "sporadically." But it has never been clear whether mismatch repair defects are linked to cancer recurrence rates, time-to-recurrence and site of recurrence and whether such defects influence response to chemotherapy.

To explore these questions, Frank A. Sinicrope, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and colleagues analyzed data from more than 2,000 clinical trial patients who had been treated after surgery with chemotherapy that included 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a standard drug used in colorectal cancer. All patients had stage II or III colon cancer.

The patients with defective mismatch repair had lower rates of tumor recurrence, longer remissions, fewer metastases, and better survival rates compared to those without the defects. Both overall survival and disease-free survival were improved.

Whether mismatch repair status influences response to 5-FU therapy has been a subject of some debate. In this study treatment with 5-FU reduced recurrence rates in stage III, regardless of mismatch repair status, but not stage II patients.

The researchers also compared the effects of 5-FU-based therapy in patients thought to have inherited mismatch repair defects versus those whose defects occurred sporadically. They suggest that 5-FU appeared to reduce recurrences only in those with inherited defects.

"In conclusion," they write, "our data demonstrate that patients with defective mismatch repair colon cancers have a statistically significant reduction in their rates of tumor recurrence, a delayed time to recurrence, and better survival rates" than those without the defects. They note that the difference between inherited and sporadic tumors, though a preliminary finding, warrants further study.

In an accompanying editorial, Sabine Tejpar,M.D., Ph.D., of University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Leuven, Belgium, and colleagues note that the influence of mismatch repair defects on patients' prognosis and response to 5-FU has long been a contentious issue. They say that this study, with its large number of samples, provides "valuable information about the prognostic and certainly the predictive role" of mismatch repair defects. The editorialists conclude that it will be important to validate whether patients should have their mismatch repair defects identified as hereditary or sporadic before deciding on chemotherapy with 5-FU.

Lao Ren Cha - ???: Expat Women: Confessions (A Book Review)

Expat Women: Confessions

Andrea Martins and Victoria Hepworth

I was excited about reading and reviewing this book once I heard about its launch in May (no, I was not paid for this review) ? I enjoyed reading it and considering throughout how it might be of use to those who read this blog and expat women generally.

The pink cover and whimsical title font of Expat Women: Confessions might lead you to believe it?s written along the lines of a bubblegum girlie book ? you know, like the Shopaholic series (I?ve never actually read one, mind you). It?s not. The format is Question-and-Answer, and inspired by the Confessions column featured on the site from which the book originated. The issues discussed are not bubblegum in any way ?they?re the tough, rarely aired in public issues that many women feel nervous about discussing in the insular expat communities one finds in most countries. I?m not particularly attached to the expat community in Taiwan ? I do feel that this is because I am a bit too old for the cram school crowd but a bit too young hippie for the businesspeople. I do have expat friends, but I wouldn?t call myself ?connected? to either end of the expat spectrum in Taiwan. Even I know, however, how quickly gossip spreads in these communities.

Expat Women: Confessions never really clarifies if the questions are fictitious, ?inspired by? or real, or whether they are unique to the book or culled from the popular column. My guess, given the range of issues and different voices of those asking, that they are at least based on real, submitted questions, with some details changed to protect submitters? anonymity.

The questions themselves ? which range from adjustment issues to affairs and infidelity and abuse abroad to medical issues abroad to substance abuse to job loss and repatriation ? are answered brilliantly (for the most part ? I?ll discuss the answers I disagree with below) and in such a way that the specific question is not only addressed, but the answer also has broader appeal to those dealing with similar situations who might see a little of themselves in some of the queries. I do believe this format is one of the book?s strengths. It is also written in a strong, clear voice, the writers have empathy but also detached common sense for all of the expat women whose issues they tackle, and the tougher questions are clearly fielded by a pro.

For these reasons, I would recommend that any woman living as an expatriate buy and read this book. I would say overall that my reaction was quite positive.

That said, you guys know me. I wear my cynicism on my sleeve. I never think anything is perfect and I over-analyze everything. Here are some things I didn?t like ? keeping in mind that these issues are minor and my overall ?thumbs up? still stands:

Marketing Demographic ?

Here?s the thing about me: I don?t fit in to any one particular expat circle. I would say overall that I am not connected to either spectrum of the expat community ? I?m too young for the cram school teachers and most students at the language centers and too young, hippie-ish and critical of the business world (even though I work in it!) for the older folks who are here on company assignments. I have my assortment of expat friends of different backgrounds and a bevy of local friends. I don?t say this with much pride: I don?t feel that having a lot of local friends and being connected to the expat community are mutually exclusive. I am not one of those ?I am better than you because my friends are local? types. Those people annoy me too. It?s just how I am ? I?ve always had ?assortments of friends? rather than a ?community?.

As such, it was immediately clear to me who this book is marketed at ? not all expat women are identical, and they chose to go for the women sent abroad for business or ?trailing spouses? ? women living abroad due to their husband?s overseas assignment. If I had to narrow it down further, I?d say it?s mostly aimed at those women living abroad as trailing spouses, as the authors admit several times that most overseas assignments go to men, and that more often than not the ?trailing spouse? is the wife.

In that sense, the book didn?t apply to me at all. There are a lot of asides about contract negotiations, what your company is giving you as a package, whether or not you have a company car and corporate culture abroad. A lot of the discussions center around family and children abroad, something I have no experience in. This is simply not how I ended up abroad ? I came here, taught kids for a year, took a few classes at Shi-da, got fed up, quit to study on my own, and started focusing more on my job as a corporate trainer. I moved abroad alone and my now-husband moved here later. There was no ?package?, there were no contracts to review. I was in my twenties and made it happen for myself. I would have liked to see more advice aimed at women who did not come over on a corporate contract or as the spouse of someone who did, and more references to and advice for women who would raise their eyebrows at the idea of a company car or relocation package ? women like me. I realize that books need to be marketed to a demographic, but as an expat woman who moved abroad independently, I?d like to see more advice for my demographic.

That said, this blog has no such target demographic. I would suppose that many of my readers are younger and I hope at least half, if not more, are female (as I do focus on women?s issues as much as I can). If there are any women in Taiwan sent by their company or trailing spouses reading, this book would be of greater use to them.

I guess, I felt that the book targeted women older than me (although not all women abroad due to a work assignment are older ? I?m thirty), with a different lifestyle, different reasons for being abroad, and more of an interest in meeting other expats than spending time with locals. I feel as though it was written for the women I see in Tianmu, the ones in their mid-thirties to fifties, with a kid or two trailing behind, whom you'll meet if you attend an event at the American or European schools. That's great - and I have nothing against those women or a book for them - but they don't represent me.

A dearth of discussion on issues of sexism in expat life -

I would have also liked to see more of a discussion on the reasons why more ?trailing spouses? are women and more people sent abroad for work are men, rather than a blanket acceptance of this inequality. It is addressed, but only in a few sentences. I would like to see someone really pick this apart. As someone who has never been sent abroad by a company, I?m not sure I?m the person to do that (though if nobody does, I sure will give it a go).

There was also a discussion of sexism in the workplace, which while valuable, I felt didn?t delve deeply enough into this issue ? an issue that I do feel is the catalyst for many women abroad to pack up and move home. The sexism can be psychologically difficult to deal with both at work and in the every day life as an expat woman, and yet it was only just glanced over. I feel an entire chapter could be dedicated to this issue alone. If we discussed it more, perhaps we could come up with a canon of solid advice that could help struggling women feel better about life abroad, handle the sexism issues they face, and perhaps fewer would end up going home for this reason.

Workplace realities -

There are a few other areas where I would not give the same advice as the book ? one questioner wrote in from Taiwan, where the long working hours were killing her. The advice was to scale back her hours to something more reasonable, and if it was reasonable, the company and her colleagues would accept it. I do feel that this is inaccurate: a deeper knowledge of Taiwanese ? or even East Asian ? work culture would reveal that this is in fact not always (or even usually) possible. ?Reasonable? work hours are different here ? locals regularly work ten or even twelve hour days ? and a more appropriate answer would have acknowledged this fact, and the expectations that come with it. Scaling back to a more reasonable schedule, such as eight or nine hours, would not be respected.

This is, by the way, one reason why I am so cynical of the business world in general, and business in Asia specifically.

The realities of resources -

Finally, there were many calls to visit a ?life coach? or talk to a counselor or therapist. While this is admirable advice for several of the issues for which it was mentioned, the reality surrounding language issues and taboos about psychological problems and their treatment abroad was not discussed ? the entire issue of therapy abroad was treated as it would be in the USA. That is, as a service readily available and while still stigmatized to a certain extent, not as frowned-upon as it is in many foreign countries.

Take Taiwan for example ? good luck finding a talk therapist here. A psychiatrist would be easy (through work, I actually know two who speak excellent English, although one is currently a clinical researcher and the other specializes in rehabilitation, so not much use for someone with psychiatric issues that are not related to brain injury), but a therapist? Who speaks English well enough to help you through complex issues? Good luck with that. There are Chinese-language resources ? many churches offer counseling (but most will assume you are Christian or put a Christian bent on their advice, which is fine if you are Christian, but if you?re not it may not work for you) and therapists do exist, but generally speaking the stigma surrounding depression or other psychological issues is so great here that you are not likely to get far in your search (if I ever do find a licensed talk therapist who speaks good English, I will post a reference. I don?t need therapy so I haven?t exactly been looking).

I did briefly search for premarital counselors at one point ? we had no issues, but it?s better to do a spot check when things are great to make sure your foundation is solid, right? ? and found quite little (although a Google search does turn up some leads ? most of them religiously affiliated, which I didn?t want).

Conclusion ?

Despite everything above, I do think this book is worth reading for any woman abroad. Even if you dismiss everything about contracts, children and spouses and you take advice about therapy and work hours with a grain of salt, there?s a lot of good stuff in here. Chances are that you?ll see a little bit of yourself in some of the questions, and even if you don?t, it doesn?t hurt to be mentally prepared for issues you might face.
