Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor 2

Things are busy over at Marvel Studios, between the planning of ?Phase Two? for its shared movie universe and shooting on the sequel Thor: The Dark World. The God of Thunder?s second standalone film introduces multiple new characters and new worlds from Norse mythology, in addition to making the Thor universe feel more tangible and alive ? as opposed to the shimmering, but lifeless, surfaces of Asgard in director Kenneth Branagh?s first film.

Chris Hemsworth stepped away from playing the eponymous hammer-wielding superhero to discuss a handful of interesting topics, such as the process of working with director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) on Thor 2, why he settled on a ?proper English? accent for the character, and what his experience making The Avengers was like.

On his feelings about working with Taylor, Hemsworth said (via Prestige Hong Kong):

?Awesome. Yeah, I love the way he adds an incredibly organic element to the fantastical world of?Thrones, and I think that?s what?Thor?could benefit from. It?s grounded in reality, no matter how mythical or science-fiction-like it becomes. There?s a truth to it all. Certainly, working with him now, you can see he doesn?t want Thor or the Asgardians to seem like some distant race or god-like. He still wants them to be relatable.?

One look at the UK shooting locations and you can see that Hemsworth is telling the truth, as far as the idea that The Dark World (and its ?inhabitants?) will look and feel all the more convincing. By comparison, Jotunheim (the Frost Giant world) in Thor was visually-impressive but had too much digital polish to work in a grittier portrayal of the Nine Realms (much like Asgard in that film). So, you can expect the ?look? of those places to change accordingly, should they appear in the sequel.

On the subject of his vocal mannerisms as Thor, Hemsworth said:

?[For?Thor], there?s a lot of ongoing reading and rereading of the script. I have a guy that I work with a lot who?s a voice coach, but also far more than that. We pull scripts apart and go into who these people are; his whole attitude of approaching a character is, instead of trying to mimic something or work out technically how you do that, it?s more why does someone speak like that. What?s in your personality or nature, or your past that has moulded you into sounding like this? That then raises a whole lot of questions about the character ? which is great. You do that all the way through the film, even afterwards it?s hard to switch off sometimes.?

With regards to his choice of ?very proper? English accent for the character:

?For whatever reason, it just seems to fit that world. Probably for no other reason than that it?s the way it?s been done in history. We associate Shakespearean speak [with god-like beings] because so many British actors have done it over the years. It resonates with the audience. Also, we had Anthony Hopkins, who is Welsh but has similar tones. I certainly couldn?t play him as Australian because people would think, ?That?s Crocodile Dundee!??

Lastly, with regards to his time making The Avengers (under the direction of Joss Whedon):

?Most of the time we?re all on set together and it just became a laugh for all of us. We sort of fed off [the energy of] each other and before you know it, someone has to step in and say, ?Come on, we?re trying to shoot a movie here!? Robert Downey Jr obviously has an incredible sense of humour and wit about him, which you see in all his characters. He?s like that in real life. You?re playing catch-up; always 10 steps behind what he?s saying. All those guys I learned something from and admired.?

Benefits outweigh risks in Philippines peace deal

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? A tentative roadmap to peace in the southern Philippines announced this week is the first major step in the latest attempt to end a long and bloody insurgency waged by minority Muslims in the predominantly Christian nation. It carries the risk of failure that has been the fate of similar peace agreements, but strong domestic and international backing could boost its chances of success. Here's a look at the background and the future of the deal:

SEEDS OF THE FIGHTING:

Muslims in Mindanao first took up arms decades ago to defend what they see as their traditional homeland under threat by Christians. Tens of thousands have died in ethnic clashes and massacres that sowed bad blood for generations.

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the U.S., Australia and other governments have looked at the southern third of the Philippines ? Mindanao Island and neighboring provinces ? as a second Afghanistan, a place where militants from Indonesia, Malaysia and Southeast Asia fled in order to escape crackdowns at home. They sought refuge with Muslim rebels and set up training grounds in their strongholds.

For the rest of the Philippines, Mindanao conjures a place where warlords rule, ransom kidnappings are common and terrorists bomb churches and ambush travelers.

RECOVERING FROM A FAILED DEAL:

A deal granting autonomy to five Muslim provinces was signed in 1996 and implemented on paper years later, but it changed little in the poverty- and violence-stricken region. Elections were rigged, corruption rife, and political bosses with private armies ruled the day. Disgruntled guerrillas carried on with bombings and attacks under the banner of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

A fresh autonomy proposal from then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo flopped in 2008. It was criticized for promising too much too soon and without public scrutiny.

When President Benigno Aquino III was elected in 2010, he agreed to meet with the Moro rebel chief, Al Haj Murad ? something Arroyo did not do. The men met at the Tokyo airport, concluded that they could work together and set in motion a series of meetings in neighboring Malaysia, which has been facilitating the talks since 1997.

The talks this time involved the so-called International Contact Group of representatives from the U.S., Europe and Muslim nations who acted as witnesses, observers and advisers. Negotiations under Aquino were initially kept under wraps but now are open to public input.

High public trust in Aquino gave him the backing he needed to carry on with the peace talks, which he hopes to conclude by 2016, when his single six-year term ends.

GIVE-AND-TAKE:

After 32 rounds of calibrated negotiations, the outline of a deal came clear: a new autonomous region will take shape in the south, with Moro rebels giving up their quest for independence in exchange for broad powers to govern themselves. The central government will maintain control over defense and foreign affairs, while the Moros ? their aging leaders worn down by decades of fighting ? will exercise substantial powers locally, including the justice system and tax collection. Sharia law will be enforced but will apply only to Muslims.

Unlike the previous peace deal, this one calls for rebels to disarm.

THE PITFALLS:

Many tricky details remain to be worked out. That includes the exact extent of the Moro territory. Although broadly based on an existing autonomous region, the rebels want it expanded. Other potential stumbling blocks are how much tax revenue the locals will have to give the central government, and how and when the 11,000-strong rebel force will be disbanded.

THE ABU SAYYAF:

Al-Qaida-linked militants from the brutal Abu Sayyaf group, which gained notoriety with kidnappings and beheadings of foreign tourists, including Americans, are not part of any peace deal. Abu Sayyaf and the Moro rebels cross paths in several parts of the Philippines. The hope is that a broader peace agreement with the Moro rebels will isolate the extremists and deprive them of sanctuaries and logistical support.

U.S. TROOPS:

About 600 U.S. troops will continue to be based in the southern Philippines, training Filipino forces, exchanging intelligence and providing equipment. Mostly aimed at the Abu Sayyaf and their allies from the Indonesian-based Jemaah Islamiyah network, the U.S. forces are trying to ensure that the fragile region does not become a magnet for militants, which it may if peace deal falters.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is proposing the U.S. take a more assertive role in Syria, put conditions on aid to Egypt and tighten sanctions on Iran as he looks to use a planned foreign policy address to paint President Barack Obama as a weak leader who has limited America's influence on global affairs.

Declaring that "it's time to change course in the Middle East" and accusing Obama of "passivity," Romney plans to call Monday for the U.S. to work with other countries to arm rebels in Syria with weapons that can defeat the "tanks, helicopters and fighter jets" that make up President Bashar Assad's army.

Romney also plans to call for tougher sanctions on Iran than those already in place, and plans to say he will condition aid to Egypt on continued support for its peace treaty with neighboring Israel. He will emphasize his commitment to a two-state solution for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, a process he dismissed during a secretly videotaped fundraiser in May.

Romney plans to make the comments at a major foreign policy speech at Virginia Military Institute. His campaign released excerpts of his prepared speech in advance. Aides previewing the speech in a conference call with reporters emphasized that the Republican, who took a hawkish tone throughout the GOP primary, would outline a "mainstream" foreign policy vision.

"Hope is not a strategy. We cannot support our friends and defeat our enemies in the Middle East when our words are not backed up by deeds," Romney plans to say in the address, adding that the U.S. should use its influence "wisely, with solemnity and without false pride, but also firmly and actively."

Romney's attempt to outline his approach as commander in chief comes amid turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa. Iran is believed to be pursuing a nuclear weapon, Syria is locked in a civil war, peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are moribund, and anti-American protests have erupted in several countries. Attackers linked to al-Qaida killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, last month, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The Republican has given several foreign policy speeches throughout the campaign, including one in Reno, Nev., ahead of a weeklong trip abroad in the summer. That trip was fraught, with Romney offending his British hosts by questioning their security preparations for the Olympic Games and raising hackles among Palestinians who charged him with racism after he said culture was part of the reason Israelis were more economically successful than the neighboring Palestinians.

In the fall, Romney faced criticism for his hurried and harsh reaction to news of protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the near-simultaneous attacks in Libya. Before the administration knew of Stevens' death, Romney criticized Obama for sympathizing with the attackers. In the aftermath, top Republicans ? including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the 2008 presidential nominee ? urged Romney to give a speech laying out his vision for U.S. foreign policy.

The Obama campaign dismissed Romney's planned Monday address as a rehashed attempt to fix past blunders.

"We are not going to be lectured by someone who's been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy every time he sticks his toe in the foreign policy waters," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. The campaign prepared a TV ad calling Romney "reckless" and "amateurish" on foreign policy questions. Obama's aides also insisted Romney's speech included few specifics that were markedly different from the president's own record.

While Obama has held an edge in polls on handling foreign policy issues, Republican aides say the Benghazi attack ? and ensuing questions about possible intelligence failures and lax security at the Libya consulate ? has given Romney a new opportunity to criticize the president.

Now, following a strong debate performance, Romney will give the speech at the alma mater of former Secretary of State George Marshall, the architect of the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe in the wake of World War II. In the conference call previewing the speech, aides pointed to that connection to illustrate Romney's vision of leadership and engagement on the world stage. The advisers cast Romney as part of a long tradition of statesmen beginning with former President Harry Truman; adviser Rich Williamson said Romney would offer a "bipartisan" approach while aide Eliot Cohen referred to Romney as "very much in the mainstream of foreign policy."

Romney's outline of an approach to Syria comes at a critical time in part because the violence there has spilled over their border with Turkey. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Saturday the conflict between those neighboring countries could embroil the broader region.

Romney aides said the candidate would not call for direct U.S. aid to arm the Syrian rebels, but said he would support providing them with enough force to force Assad from power. In the speech, Romney plans to emphasize Iran's ties to the Syrian government and insist the U.S., through allies, should "support the many Syrians who would deliver that defeat to Iran rather than sitting on the sidelines." That would allow the U.S. to "develop influence with those forces in Syria that will one day lead a country that sits at the heart of the Middle East."

Obama's administration still seeks a peaceful political transition, even though the president acknowledged in August that the likelihood of a soft landing for Syria's civil war "seems pretty distant."

Obama called on Assad to step down more than a year ago and has sought consensus at the United Nations on a diplomatic power-transfer plan, but has been stymied repeatedly by Russia and China. Obama has stepped up U.S. humanitarian aid and nonlethal assistance, now at a combined $175 million, to the political opposition.

But he has opposed directly providing weapons to the rebels or using U.S. air power to prevent Syrian jets from flying.

The administration says U.S. arms assistance would further militarize Syria and make it even harder to stabilize the country after Assad's downfall, which it insists is inevitable. And it says it still doesn't know the different fighting groups well enough to provide them guns, considering the small but growing influence of Islamist extremists among their ranks.

As of this week, anyone caught snacking around the Eternal City?s centuries-old monuments and archeological sites could find themselves landed with a fine of up to 500 euros ($650).

In an attempt to bring a greater level of decorum to a city not known for order, Rome city council has passed a decree banning tourists from snacking in the historic center, which recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

That includes Piazza Navona, with its exquisite marble fountains, and the Pantheon, a vast Roman temple converted into a church. Other areas subject to the crackdown include Via dei Fori Imperiali, the broad avenue which links Piazza Venezia, Rome?s main square, with the Colosseum, the ancient arena where gladiators and slaves once fought.

Thinking of emulating Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday by eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps? Think again. It could prove to be a very expensive ice cream.

"It is forbidden to encamp or erect makeshift shelters and stop to eat or drink in zones which have a particular historic or architectural value," reads the ordinance adopted by Rome city council this week.

The law is intended to ?guarantee the protection of areas of merit in the historic center,? it added.

In what one Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, called the start of a ?war on the panino," fines will range from 25 euros ($32) up to 500 euros ($650).

In many ways the new clamp-down reflects a schism in attitudes towards public eating between Italians and tourists.

Visitors may be happy to chow down on a slice of pizza or sandwich?on the steps of a Renaissance church or ancient Roman monument, taking a rest from the exhausting challenge of touring the city on foot. But that leaves most Romans aghast ? they rarely eat or drink on the street.

You don't see people guzzling enormous take-out coffees from paper cups; Italians go to a cafe for a cappuccino or a cafe macchiato, and drink it there, often standing up at the bar.

Eating in public is not done. I have even been told off for eating in a restaurant while reading a newspaper ? on the grounds that it will ruin my digestion, and that I should forget about work at least for an hour.

Rome is just the latest Italian city to try to curb indecorous behavior by tourists.

Similar bans have been adopted in Venice, where snacking is prohibited in St. Mark's Square and around famous landmarks, as well as Florence and Bologna.

But critics said the draconian new law could drive away tourists just as Italy needs them more than ever ? locals are spending less in restaurants, bars, and cafes as a result of a grinding recession and the imposition of austerity measures intended to tame the country?s 1.9 trillion euro national debt.

The center-right mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, is acting like a ?sheriff? and ?transforming Rome into a city of rules and regulations,? said Angelo Bonelli, an opposition councilor in the city administration.

Others said Rome had more serious problems to contend with ? streets are often strewn with rubbish, illegal hawkers and touts harass tourists outside St. Peter?s Basilica and the Colosseum, and cars are allowed to double- or even triple-park.

?To start pestering tourists while they are eating lunch out of a bag really seems the last of our problems,? says Dario Nanni, a member of the left-leaning Democratic Party.

Italy has a somewhat checkered history when it comes to law enforcement, so whether tourists munching on sandwiches and slices of pizza really will be slapped with heavy fines remains to be seen.

Wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow will always be of infinite use for the avid landscaper and improver.
