Egypt deploys troops in Suez after 9 killed on anniversary of uprising

CAIRO/ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt's armed forces deployed troops in the city of Suez early on Saturday after nine people were shot dead during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Mursi, underlining the country's deep divisions as it marked the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Eight of the dead, including a policeman, were shot dead in Suez, and another was shot and killed in the city of Ismailia, medics said. Another 456 people were injured across Egypt, officials said, in unrest on Friday fuelled by anger at Mursi and his Islamist allies over what the protesters see as their betrayal of the revolution.

Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". In a statement, he also called on Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing their views peacefully.

The troops were deployed in Suez after the head of the state security police in the city asked for reinforcements. The army distributed pamphlets to residents assuring them the deployment was temporary and meant to secure the city.

"We have asked the armed forces to send reinforcements on the ground until we pass this difficult period," Adel Refaat, head of state security in Suez, told state television.

Friday's anniversary laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals.

The schism is hindering the efforts of Mursi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that already triggered bloody street battles last month.

Thousands of opponents of Mursi massed on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square - the cradle of the revolt against Mubarak - to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Mursi emerged.

In Suez, the military deployed armored vehicles to guard state buildings, witnesses and security sources said, as symbols of government were targeted across the country.

Street battles erupted in cities including Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.

"Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state. We say no to the Brotherhood state," Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Mursi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

The Brotherhood denies accusations that it is seeking to dominate Egypt, labeling them a smear campaign by its rivals.

'LEAVE! LEAVE! LEAVE!'

There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.

News of the deaths capped a day of violence that started in the early hours of Friday. Before dawn in Cairo, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they approached a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square.

Clouds of teargas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stone-throwing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day. Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.

Protesters echoed the chants of 2011's historic 18-day uprising. "The people want to bring down the regime," they chanted. "Leave! Leave! Leave!" chanted others as they marched towards the square.

"We are not here to celebrate but to force those in power to submit to the will of the people. Egypt now must never be like Egypt during Mubarak's rule," said Mohamed Fahmy, an activist.

There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and riot police clashed near local government offices. Black smoke billowed from tires set ablaze by youths.

In Cairo, police fired teargas to disperse a few dozen protesters trying to remove barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace, witnesses said. A few masked men got as far as the gates before they were beaten back.

Teargas was also fired at protesters who tried to remove metal barriers outside the state television building.

Outside Cairo, protesters broke into the offices of provincial governors in Ismailia and Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta. A local government building was torched in the Nile Delta city of al-Mahalla al-Kubra.

With an eye on parliamentary elections likely to begin in April, the Brotherhood marked the anniversary with a charity drive across the nation. It plans to deliver medical aid to one million people and distribute affordable basic foodstuffs.

Writing in Al-Ahram, Egypt's flagship state-run daily, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie said the country was in need of "practical, serious competition" to reform the corrupt state left by the Mubarak era.

"The differences of opinion and vision that Egypt is passing through is a characteristic at the core of transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and clearly expresses the variety of Egyptian culture," he wrote.

Mursi's opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through the new constitution last month.

"I am taking part in today's marches to reject the warped constitution, the 'Brotherhoodisation' of the state, the attack on the rule of law, and the disregard of the president and his government for the demands for social justice," Amr Hamzawy, a prominent liberal politician, wrote on his Twitter feed.

The Brotherhood says its rivals are failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat via free elections.

India is the new destination for film festivals

One of the positive benefits that accrued on account of the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers in India is that the business of exhibition of cinema started moving out to quaint places in the country. These new breed of filmmakers has really deconstructed the business of film exhibition by taking it to their respective cities, from where they emerged to make the film viewing a rich and invigorating experience.

The paradigm shift in the business of film festivals, it's moving out of the metropolitan cities is an Outlier moment in the history of cinema as it brings out the fans and aficionados to participate in the process of film making, exhibitions and to share their insights about the films being exhibited. After all, Cannes which is considered a Mecca of film festivals, otherwise is a small town where the filmmakers from all across the world converge to show their films, talk about the films being exhibited, seek inspiration to be there at one point of time or the other in their cinematic career.

In India the centers that have emerged as new destinations for film festivals include, Leh- which has now emerged as the highest place in the world for film festivals, Patna, Gorakhpur, Dharamshala. Obviously the film festivals when they are held along with the peak tourist seasons provide best platform to publicize the destination as a centre of tourist interest as also give the film festival the much needed publicity. The film festival at Ladakh that was held in June last year, coinciding with the peak tourist season, has given Ladakh an international publicity as being the centre where apart from freaking out in the landscape, also provides a window of opportunity for the tourists to catch up with the films that they might not have been able to see or even hear in their abodes, probably owing to the fact these films may have been crowded out in multiplexes all over the country by films having commercial component.

Film festivals that are held in quaint locations, like Ladakh, Gorakhpur etc., also provide an opportunity for the fans to view quality international cinema. If one were to view the off-beat films that were released last year in particular, one thing that would emerge as the underlining motif is that these films have been conferred with one award or the other at the new centres of film festivals around the globe. Well, the time has indeed come for the Indian cities to stake their claim and make their name on the film posters of the films with difference to publicize their names as the countries where serious cinema and meaningful cinema indeed is viewed with interest.

Breakfast Briefing: Post Office software probe, Google's donkey death denial, Catzilla benchmark

Posted on 17 Jan 2013 at 08:44

Today's top tech stories include the Post Office's potentially costly bean-counting software, Google's donkey that rises from the grave, Catzilla (the mutant ninja benchmark) and more.

Second-class Post Office system probed

When computers go wrong they have a very real world impact, as several members of staff at the Post Office can attest. Computer Weekly reports how bosses are investigating an accounting system called Horizon that was supposed to simplify the accounts. Instead, say employees, the software that dates back to 1996 has been error prone, spouting out mistakes that leave postmasters in the lurch.

"Over the years, dozens of postmasters have been charged and even jailed for accounting shortfalls, while others have had to make up cash discrepancies following prosecutions," Computer Weekly points out.

Google denies donkey hit-and-run

Google has been accused of many things recently - deliberately dumping rivals down its search results, over-friendliness to North Korea, donkey murder. Yes, you read that right: Google?s Street View cars have been accused of a hit-and-run attack on a helpless donkey in Botswana, after eagle-eyed members of the public spotted a prone animal lying prostrate in the road, seemingly after being passed by Google?s camera cars.

Google has leapt to its own defence on its Lat Long blog, providing photographic evidence that said donkey was merely enjoying a dust bath, and was back on its feet by the time the Google Street View car had set off down the road. We can all sleep easier tonight.

Catzilla: the benchmark to destroy all benchmarks

We use lots of tools to benchmark PCs, but we barely even scratch the surface of what's out there. As if to highlight that point, AllBenchmark has just released the full version of its latest graphics benchmark tool, Catzilla. Yes, Catzilla. It involves a giant mutant cat with lasers for eyes, and a whole lot of exploding things, and it's insanely entertaining. You can download the tool here, but to be honest we?re just enjoying watching the YouTube version.

Apple's App Store evangelism allergy

Venture Beat takes a look inside Apple's app policies with an interesting spin on what and why the company does and doesn't accept in its App Store. We all know there are guidelines on what is and isn't acceptable, but the piece teases out aspects of the ideology behind some of the issues. Apple thinks any kind of controversial discussion should be put down on paper or in songs ? not played out as part of an app.

"If you want to criticise a religion, write a book. If you want to describe sex, write a book or a song, or create a medical app," the company says. "It can get complicated, but we have decided to not allow certain kinds of content in the App Store."

Tech companies won?t replace manufacturing jobs

Tech companies are changing the way we work - but it might not mean more jobs. As Vice notes: "Google, Amazon, Apple, and Facebook combined account for over $1 trillion dollars of market capitalisation. Yet they only employ around 150,000 people total. That's less than half the number of people who work for GE. And it's roughly the number of people that enter the US job market every month. In other words, it?s a farce to believe that tech giants, internet startups, and app developers will ever be able to employ the same number of people that manufacturing once did."

Depressed? Vice suggests we should take advantage of robots doing the "heavy lifting" to reduce our work weeks. Good idea - we?ll be clocking off at noon.

Samsung Chromebox Series 3 pops up in online stores with a Core i5

Samsung Chromebox Series 3 2012

No one would accuse Samsung or other Chrome OS supporters of hardware overkill: the Chromebox Series 3 and other Google-based PCs often carry just enough processing grunt to browse the web properly. Imagine the resulting surprise when a Liliputing reader discovers an unannounced Core i5-equipped model listed as in stock at multiple retailers. The XE300M22-A01US carries a 2.5GHz, Sandy Bridge-era dual-core chip on top of the usual 4GB of memory and 16GB solid-state drive. That's far from cutting edge, but more powerful than the creaky Celeron reserved for those who didn't receive a Google I/O edition. Samsung hasn't confirmed the existence of the quicker Chromebox, and there's some question as to whether the system incorporates the sleeker 2013 redesign or sticks to the tried-and-true 2012 layout; we've reached out to both Google and Samsung and will let you know if there's more concrete information. Quoted prices suggest there's a premium over the original at $405 or more, as of this writing. It's a lot to pay for a PC without native apps, although those who want only the unfettered web might have something close to their dream desktop.

Announcing: Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

Psy?cho?log?i?cal Health and Safety in the Work?place Stan?dard released!

Back?ground

In?recent?years,?a?grow?ing?base?of?evi?dence?has?illu?mi?nated?the?impor?tance?of?address?ing the psy?cho?log?i?cal require?ments of employ?ees in the work?place. Con?se?quently, the?Men?tal?Health?Com?mis?sion?of?Canada?(MHCC)?cham?pi?oned?the?devel?op?ment?of?a?National?Stan?dard?of?Canada?for?Psy?cho?log?i?cal?Health?and?Safety?in?the?Work?place work?ing?col?lab?o?ra?tively?with?the?Bureau?de?nor?mal?i?sa?tion?du?Qu?bec?(BNQ)?and?CSA?Standards.

The intent of devel?op?ing the Stan?dard is to pro?vide sys?tem?atic sup?ports that will enable Cana?dian employ?ers to develop and con?tin?u?ously improve psy?cho?log?i?cally safe and healthy work envi?ron?ments for their employees.

Key points about the Standard

  • The Stan?dard is offi?cially titled Psy?cho?log?i?cal Health and Safety in the Work?place ? Pre?ven?tion, pro?mo?tion and guid?ance to staged implementation.
  • The Stan?dard is vol?un?tary. It is not a legal frame?work or regulation.
  • The Stan?dard was devel?oped for both employ?ees and employers.
  • The Stan?dard is about men?tal ill?ness pre?ven?tion and men?tal health pro?mo?tion in the work?place. It is intended to help pre?vent harm to all peo?ple in the work?place, whether or not they have expe?ri?ence with men?tal illness.
  • The Stan?dard offers any type of orga?ni?za?tion a struc?ture and process for chang?ing how men?tal health and men?tal ill?ness are approached in the workplace.
  • The Stan?dard can be used dif?fer?ently by dif?fer?ent busi?nesses and orga?ni?za?tions depend?ing on their needs. Some busi?nesses may use the Stan?dard to cre?ate poli?cies and processes for pro?mot?ing good men?tal health while oth?ers may use it to inform train?ing programs.
  • Strong orga?ni?za?tional lead?er?ship from all work?place stake?hold?ers and a com?pre?hen?sive approach to orga?ni?za?tional change will also be required.

It is impor?tant to note that the Stan?dard is a start?ing point for chang?ing how men?tal health and men?tal ill?ness are approached in the work?place. Not all issues related to employee men?tal health can be addressed by meet?ing the Stan?dard alone.

Why is a national Stan?dard needed?

1. Employee well-being/public health case for action

Employ?ees ben?e?fit from work?places that pro?mote and pro?tect their psy?cho?log?i?cal health and safety. ?To this point, the con?sen?sus of research in this area is that healthy work lives play an essen?tial part in main?tain?ing pos?i?tive men?tal health as evi?dence by the con?clu?sions of the MHCC 2012 report Chang?ing Direc?tions, Chang?ing Lives: The Men?tal Health Strat?egy for Canada:

  • Adults spend more wak?ing hours in the work?place than any?where else. This includes peo?ple liv?ing wit men?tal health prob?lems and illnesses.
  • Healthy work lives play an essen?tial part in main?tain?ing pos?i?tive men?tal health.
  • The work?place plays a key role in pub?lic health ini?tia?tives aimed at pro?mot?ing men?tal health and pre?vent?ing men?tal illness.
  • The health or harm cre?ated in work?places spills over into the well-being of fam?i?lies, com?mu?ni?ties and soci?ety at?large.

2. Eco?nomic case for action

For employ?ers, the busi?ness case in favour of the new stan?dard rests on four main para?me?ters ? (1) enhanced cost effec?tive?ness, (2) improved risk man?age?ment, (3) increased orga?ni?za?tional recruit?ment and reten?tion as well as cor?po?rate social respon?si?bil?ity. (4) It is also an impor?tant risk man?age?ment strat?egy as employ?ers are increas?ingly held legally respon?si?ble for main?tain?ing psy?cho?log?i?cal health and safety in the work?place and increas?ingly sub?ject to civil suits for employee harass?ment, bul?ly?ing and/or chronic overwork.

Wit?ness the following:

  • One in five Cana?di?ans will expe?ri?ence a men?tal ill?ness in a given year. In 2011, 40% of Cana?di?ans expe?ri?enc?ing men?tal ill?ness were between the ages of 20?39 (Sem?tanin, P. et al. 2011, The list and eco?nomic impact of major men?tal ill?nesses in Canada: 2011 to?2041).
  • Men?tal health prob?lems and ill?nesses are a lead?ing cause of dis?abil?ity in Canada, esti?mated to account for nearly 30% of dis?abil?ity claims and 70% of the total costs (Saira?nen, Matzanke, D., & Smeall, D. 2011. The Busi?ness Case: Col?lab?o?rat?ing to help employ?ees main?tain their men?tal well-being. Health?care Papers).s
  • The longer some?one is away from work due to ill?ness, the less changce there is of a suc?cess?ful return to the work?place (6 months off ? 50%; 9 months ??10%)
  • If unad?dressed, the impact of men?tal health prob?lems on lost pro?duc?tiv?ity due to absen?teeism, pre?sen?teeism and turnover will cost Cana?dian busi?ness $198B over the next 30 years (Smetanin et al,?2011)
  • Between 10% and 25% of men?tal dis?abil?ity costs that are cur?rently directly borne by many employ?ers, could be avoided.

How can orga?ni?za?tions start using the Standard?

Down?load and become famil?iar with the con?tent of the Stan?dard and its annexes.

  • Des?ig?nate a cham?pion in your organization?s lead?er?ship team who will take respon?si?bil?ity for mov?ing for?ward with activ?i?ties to imple?ment the Stan?dard.
  • Get your organization?s senior lead?er?ship on board and develop a pol?icy state?ment around work?place psy?cho?log?i?cal health and safety.
  • Under?take a plan?ning process to iden?tify your organization?s gaps. Involve employ?ees at every stage. Use avail?able tools (e.g. GM@W, the Standard?s audit tool, exist?ing work?place data) to assess what your orga?ni?za?tion is cur?rently doing to sup?port psy?cho?log?i?cal health and safety in the work?place and what you can do to improve on that effort.

Resources for more infor?ma?tion and assistance

The Stan?dard includes infor?ma?tive annexes to help users develop approach to imple?men?ta?tion and inte?gra?tion. Other tools that com?pli?ment the Stan?dard include:

Wikimedia launches its crowdsourced wikivoyage online travel guide

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit parent organization of Wikipedia, just officially launched its twelfth official project: Wikivoyage. The new site, which was already in beta for a while and has a bit of a tumultuous history, is a free online travel guide that, just like Wikipedia, is edited collaboratively. It currently features about 50,000 articles and has attracted a core group of about 200 volunteer editors. The site is available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

?There?s a huge global demand for travel information, but very few sources are both comprehensive and non-commercial. That?s about to change,? said Sue Gardner, the Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation in a statement today. ?Wikivoyage is a great, useful service for travelers, and I?m expecting that with the support of the Wikimedia Foundation and the global Wikimedia editing community, it?s going to get even bigger and better.?

Even though Wikivoyage itself is new, the project itself actually goes back to 2006, when the original Wikitravel site was sold to Internet Brands and a number of users and editors left the site because the new owners introduced advertising on the service. The material on Wikitravel remained under a Creative Commons license, however, and after a lot of back and forth, a number of Wikitravel editors decided to fork the project in 2012 and merge it with Wikivoyage, which itself had split of from Wikitravel a few years before that. Because of this, you will currently find a lot of identical material on both Wikitravel and Wikivoyage.

The content from Wikitravel was eventually moved over to Wikivoyage last November and was in beta until today.

?The purpose of the Wikivoyage Association is to promote education and knowledge of all countries and regions in the world, as well as understanding among nations,? said Stefan Fussan, Chairman of the board of the Wikivoyage Association. ?We?re very excited about the launch of Wikivoyage as a Wikimedia project, and about the future role of the Association in supporting the Wikivoyage community through its programs.?

Given that a lot of travel information on the web is badly written, outdated and flat-out wrong, there is definitely a place for Wikivoyage on the web. As Wikivoyage administrator Peter Fitzgerald admits in an interview with travel news site Skift today, the site?s coverage is still a bit uneven. In return, however, you can often find information on Wikivoyage that isn?t available in commercial travel guides.

Walt Disney World ? Travel guides at Wikivoyage

The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit company focused on empowering and engaging people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free content license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally. The Wikimedia Foundation?s most prestigious project is Wikipedia, however, they are involved in others such as Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiversity.

(AP) ? The former Kate Middleton is due to give birth to her first baby in July, and her health is improving after a bout of severe morning sickness, palace officials said Monday.

The child of Kate and Prince William will be third in line to the British throne.

The 31-year-old Duchess of Cambridge, as she is formally known, spent several days in the hospital last month being treated for acute morning sickness.

She has since resumed public appearances, and looked healthy at the unveiling of an official portrait last week.

The palace said in a statement that "the duchess's condition continues to improve."

It said the two "are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July."

The announcement by the couple's St. James's Palace office lays to rest speculation that the duchess could be having twins.

The palace would not comment on whether the baby is a boy or a girl. The British government is changing centuries-old succession laws to ensure that a royal daughter will have the same claim to the throne as a son.

Bookmaker William Hill released odds on the name of the royal baby, with favorites including George, Victoria and Diana, all at 10-1.

Soldiers marry at airport, then depart for separate deployments

Sean Whitney and Caitlin Murray tied the knot on Jan. 3 at the Albany International Airport (Michael P. Farrell/Times Union)Sean Whitney and Caitlin Murray tied the knot on Jan. 3 at the Albany International Airport. (Michael P. Farrell/Times??

The bride and groom wore matching Army fatigues, short haircuts and huge grins. The couple, Army Pvts. Caitlin Murray and Sean Whitney, wed at the Albany International Airport in New York on Thursday, before catching flights to separate military assignments.

The wedding ceremony, reported by the Albany Times Union, was short and sweet, and pulled together in two hours. (Impressive, considering sometimes it can take that long to get through security.) The town?s marriage officer was called in to perform the civil ceremony. Because no family was in attendance given the last-minute decision, the airport?s CEO acted as ring bearer and witness.

A crowd of strangers and airport employees applauded when the two were declared man and wife. Photos were snapped, and the bride even pretended to throw an imaginary bouquet. The newlyweds were treated to lunch. Then, the two headed to their separate destinations.

Whitney, 26, was headed to Afghanistan. His tour is expected to end in September 2015. Murray, 20, was off to Fort Jackson, S.C., to complete basic training.

The groom told the Times Union, "We were going to wait until I got back, but we just decided we should do this now. It sounds cheesy, but I feel empowered now, knowing I have a wonderful woman waiting for me when I get home."
