Fifteen dead in north Italy quake

A new earthquake has struck the Emilia region in northern Italy, killing at least 15 people and leaving several others trapped under rubble.

Tuesday's tremor, estimated at magnitude 5.8, hit the same region where a quake 10 days ago killed seven people and destroyed many buildings.

The Italian government says the number of people made homeless has gone up from 6,000 to 14,000.

Prime Minister Mario Monti has pledged to help all those affected.

The towns of Mirandola, Medolla and Cavezzo were closest to the epicentre but the northern cities of Milan and Bologna were shaken too.

The quake struck 40km (25mi) north of Bologna and 60km east of Parma, at a depth of 9.6km (six miles), Reuters reports. It was felt as far away as Venice and the Austrian border.

Many people ran out of buildings when they felt the tremor, which hit at 09:03 local time (07:03 GMT).

Many buildings have staircases coming away from the walls.

People are hanging around in the streets, waiting to find out if they can go back into their homes.

I walked past an old people's home and everyone was in the garden.

People are absolutely terrified. Many have been unable to sleep properly since the first quake and are worried about losing their homes.

A train with 450 beds on board has been brought in for people to sleep in overnight because the buildings really aren't accessible.

The schools opened this morning, but the teachers evacuated them immediately. The walls were shaking - which was terrifying for the children.

There have been several aftershocks since, including a large one at about midday which sent people out into the streets in cities up to 100km away, the BBC's Mark Duff reports from northern Italy.

In Pisa, offices were evacuated as a precautionary measure while there were moments of panic in Venice, where a statue fell to the ground.

Pictures have been emerging from the worst-affected areas, showing factories and office blocks reduced to rubble.

Firemen with dogs are trawling through what remains of the buildings for survivors.

Among the dead were four people in Mirandola, including two who were in a factory that collapsed. Three people also died in San Felice, and two in Cavezzo, some 30km (20mi) from Modena.

The Corriere della Sera news website says three people were killed at a factory that had only been cleared for re-entry on Monday, following the first earthquake.

A parish priest in the town of Rovereto di Novi is reported to have been killed by a falling beam when he went back into his church to save a Madonna statue.

Many historic buildings now lie in ruins in Cavezzo, where the roof of a church damaged by the earlier quake collapsed on Tuesday, Il Messaggero news website reports.

Calls to emergency services have overloaded the telephone network in some areas, causing a system blackout. Train services have been halted in some parts of northern Italy.

'A feeling of waves'

An emergency cabinet meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. Troops stationed in Bologna have been sent to the affected areas.

Prime Minister Mario Monti said: "I would like to assure everyone that the Italian state will do everything we must do and is possible to do in the shortest possible time to guarantee a return to normal life in this area, that is so special, so important, so productive for Italy."

Chris Brewerton, living in Mantua, told the BBC that Tuesday's quake appeared stronger than the one on 20 May, which was 6.0 in magnitude. Mantua is 58km (36 miles) north of Modena.

"The chair starts shaking and there's a feeling of waves below me," he said. "I rush out into the garden; the shutters and garage door are banging, the ground below me swaying. It lasted about 15 seconds - it was frightening."

A Londoner living in Modena, Christopher Gilbert, said he felt "a rolling earthquake lasting around 15 seconds - people were quite frightened.

"I was having a coffee when the quake struck and felt a swaying motion so I clutched onto a bar in the cafe to steady myself. Schools and offices were evacuated," he told the BBC.

A friendly match between Italy and Luxembourg ahead of the Euro 2012 football championships, due to be played in the northern city of Parma on Tuesday, has now been called off.

The 20 May quake destroyed many centuries-old buildings of cultural value. It was the worst to hit Italy since the L'Aquila tremor that killed nearly 300 people in 2009.

Investigators in?Qatar?carried out their first extensive probes through a fire-ravaged daycare center and other charred areas inside the country's biggest mall Tuesday after a blaze that killed 19 people, including 13 children.

The blaze and equipment failures that hampered firefighting raised questions about safety measures in the megastructures across the wealthy Gulf.

The findings from the state-ordered inquest are expected within a week, the official?Qatar?News Agency said. But commentators quickly called for extensive safety reviews after the sprinkler system malfunctioned during Monday's fire.

The tragedy also is likely to push authorities across the Gulf to further examine fire safety rules in a region where the drive to build fast and big has brought concerns about the level of emergency planning.

Rescue crews in?Qatar's?capital Doha had to hack through the roof of the mammoth Villaggio mall to reach the child care facility, where the victims included 2-year-old New Zealand triplets and three Spanish siblings. Two firefighters also were killed.

"What happened is similar to murder because of the lack of safety measures in such complexes," said wrote Saleh al-Kuwari, editor of the Al Raya newspaper in Doha.

An editorial in the newspaper Al Arab urged officials around the Gulf to consider creating special firefighting and civil defense units for the energy-rich region's huge malls. The Villaggio includes an ice skating rink, theme park, movie theater and indoor Venice-style gondola rides.

"Safety requirements must be stressed," said the editorial. "They also need regular review."

Qatar's?Interior Ministry said the mall's sprinkler system malfunctioned, and rescue efforts were hampered by a lack of floor plans. Other Gulf nations also have confronted concerns about whether public safety planning can keep pace with the rapid construction.

In November, firefighters in Sharjah, north of Dubai, struggled to battle a blaze in a 25-story tower without equipment to reach the flames. The United Arab Emirates is considering bans on flammable panels in high-rise buildings after more recent back-to-back tower fires.

An Al Arab journalist, Marzouki Faisal, reported that the route to the Villaggio daycare center wound through a "maze" of narrow halls and stairways. He and others questioned the rules that allow childcare sites inside commercial buildings.

"What happened is murder as a result of negligence and idleness," he wrote.

The full list of those killed has not been issued by?Qatar?officials, but most of the nationalities are known from statements by various countries and families. The young victims include a 3-year-old French child, four Spanish children, an 18-month-old South African toddler and the New Zealand triplets, Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes.

"It's absolutely devastating," the triplets' grandmother, Jo Turner, told Fairfax Media in New Zealand.

Spain's El Pais newspaper said the Spanish children killed included three siblings, aged 2 to 7, and a 7-year-old girl from another family. Another newspaper, El Mundo, said the Spanish mothers dropped off their children while they shopped.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal was among those expressing their condolences via Twitter to the "families and friends" of the victims. The world No. 2 has appeared in a number of tournaments in the Gulf state.

At least three of the nursery teachers, women from the Philippines, died of smoke inhalation, Philippine Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in Manila. A South African woman who worked at the center also died, said a South African government statement.

The Villaggio opened in 2006 and is one of?Qatar's?most popular shopping and amusement destinations in fast-growing?Qatar, which will host football's 2022 World Cup.

More than three-quarters of?Qatar's?population of 1.8 million residents are foreigners attracted to the tiny nation for jobs ranging from laborers to government advisers.

Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani, the minister of state for interior affairs, said authorities have carried out repeated search operations in the mall and confirmed that no one is still trapped inside, according to comments posted on the ministry's website.

Qatar's?Interior Ministry said Tuesday that civil defense crews contained two "limited" fires at a school and theQatar?Aeronautics College. It said there were no casualties in either fire.

Funeral services for victims of the Villaggio fire were expected later Tuesday, it added.

NATO?! Whatever. The big news of the weekend was the three-day conference at the University of Chicago's new Logan Arts Center, "Comics: Philosophy and Practice." From Friday evening, May 18, to Sunday mid-day, May 20th, some of the greatest comics artists and graphic novelists took the stage at the impressive Gray Center For Arts and Inquiry inside the Logan Art Center.

Organized from the collaborative fellowship between cartoonist Alison Bechdel and Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of English and accomplished author Hillary Chute, Ms. Chute did an amazing job of bringing together 17 of some the biggest names and influences in cartooning.

Art Spiegelman, sometimes referred to as the Grandfather of the Graphic Novel -- although this is a term he does not enjoy -- kicked off the conference, giving a historical perspective by talking about how Mad Magazine established a baseline for self-consciousness, neo-sincerity and visual subtext, allowing the reader to question the visual information of the era. He discussed the "chicken fat" of good comics, which gives the reader so much to look at and discover that the comics can be read again and again for new sustenance, and the conundrum for this art form, once fueled by its marginality, now becoming main stream. They continue this way of digesting the world today, with often alarming self-deprecation.

As a case in point, Chris Ware will be coming out with a new graphic novel entitled, Building Stories, in which he has several books stacked into a box like floors in a building, and Seth has literally created miniature, detailed cut-out worlds in his basement. Specifically from Lynda Barry, but from the conference as a whole, there was a strong sense of encouragement for those who want to find their way in comics, or even just those who want to re-connect with drawing since the days of childhood. Ivan Brunetti spoke about how even simple elements like circles and triangles can form enough of a human form to tell a compelling story. While the conference lasted less than two days in total, there was enough fodder here to continue for a week.

New revelations on the Zodiac killer

After 40 years of silence,? a former California Highway Patrol officer says he knows the identity of the alleged Zodiac killer.

Lyndon Lafferty, 79, claims the serial killer is a 91-year-old recovering alcoholic who is living in Fairfield, Calif., outside of Napa Valley. He chooses? not to ID the suspect.

The Zodiac killer is named for the symbols used as a signature? in coded messages to the police. The killer claimed to murder 37 around the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but police only linked the suspect to five murders.

In his book, "The Zodiac Killer Cover-up," Lafferty says the suspect's rage was driven by an adulterous wife. According to Lafferty, the case was covered up by law enforcement agencies and a unnamed judge who Lafferty says was having an affair with the suspect's wife.

"The police departments in general were acting under the authority of the Solano County Sheriff, so they were instructed you do not investigate this man until you have permission from the judge," Lafferty told ABC News. "I am the only person who can testify under oath that these things were absolutely true. My satisfaction is telling my story as it happened."

Lafferty says he met the Zodiac Killer while working as a CHP officer in 1970. Lafferty spent the next 30 years tailing the suspect and gathering evidence with six other investigators.? In 2002, he began compiling his notes for the book.
